    101FC Hand Brake

    I did have a cunning plan to get the 101 mobile after my hubs were rebuilt using the hand brake for stopping since the hydraulic circuits are a fair way off. Searching through my pile of parts yesterday it appears I am missing the chassis mounted relay lever, control cable and a number of other small items.

    I've checked that a most of these bits are easily obtainable (for a price) but reading up on the club forum I gather the hand brake movement isn't that flash and that the hand brake has a tendency to pull the entire motor/gearbox assembly due to the relay being located on the chassis meaning that its not very effective and has to overcome a bunch of slop first.

    One of the suggested solutions is to use a longer hand brake cable mounted to the engine which then connects to a modified brake rod and scrap the chassis relay altogether. Has anyone locally done this with any success? Or do people think the hand brake setup is actually not that bad and its worth chasing up the missing parts that I need? Any other solutions people have used?

    If the gearbox/engine moves when the handbrake is applied then the gearbox/engine mounts are shot.

    From that aspect my handbrake works fine no issues. The issue is oil getting into the shoes from the rear of the transfer case and the need to regularly adjust the handbrake.

    The problem you mentioned will only occur if there are other issues in the drivetrain mounts.

    The hand brake on mine was very average when I first got it, but it only needed adjusting. it works very well now.

    I have no oil leaks on mine so that wasn't an issue here, but it can be - my RRC used to oil up the handbrake pretty quick before I rebuilt the TC.

    Handbrake works very well if all is in good condition.
    The handbrake....or it should be called a parking brake is just that.......for parking.
    Applying the parking brake on whisle the vehicle is moving is asking for trouble as it tends to come on hard.(will rip out a tailshaft at speed)
    The biggest issues now with 101 parking brakes is the short cable running from the fan tunnel down to the bottom of the radiator.
    That cable tends to get stiff and sticky with 30 odd years of use.
    I had Conwire make a new one for me and the improvement is so good I can park the vehicle on any slope using only my little finger on the park brake lever.( Toyota still have a lot to learn)
    I also added a grease nipple to the small bell crank on the chassis.
    I have had to do a transfercase oil seal and shoes for the parkbrake drum as the nut that holds the tailshaft drive flange can come loose and cause the seal to leak into the parking brake drum.
    I would recommend sorting the the main brakes........it not hard.......almost the same as a series 3 landy.
    Another improvement I intend to make to the park brake is fitting a grease nipple to the bell crank at the transfercase, just to see how good I can get the thing to work......one day ????

    I wouldn't take too much notice about everything said on the 101 clubs forum. I too read the bit about the engine moving with applying the park brake and some times wonder if there is something in the water overseas.

    Yup, along with all our phone calls and emails being monitored and all our movements caught on CCTV with squads of secret service men on standby in case we step out of line.

    Already I've said too much... They're coming...

    More seriously, I tend to agree with you, there's plenty of people have heard one old chap make a claim which nobody has the knowledge or gall to object too, so it becomes accepted as 'law'.
    After that you begin to find people get rather upset when you question it, as we all seem to have found.

    It could also be that from all those club members I've actually net, there's a few decent chaps you'd be happy to sit and drink with, others who have amounts of facial hair I could never hope to achieve and refuse to believe anything but the accepted folklaw.

    Don't disagree at all. I keep trying to get my moneys worth from the club membership by using the forum (since I got no where with the club shop) but it seems it more often leads me astray than helps me out. I think memberships are due shortly and my forum access will be barred so wont be a problem anymore
