These are the OE (Old) and HD (new) clutch plates from my 300Tdi. Both were Valeo. The pressure plate appeared the same, although it is possible the fingers were stronger on the new version. I can't say whether the friction material differs between OE and HD.

Depends on what the car is used for.

If you tow alot or have big tyres or lots of power then yes.

The price difference for ordinary/HD from independent suppliers is about $50 - max price for a HD clutch kit should be $300. Buying from a dealer is a big no no for those sort of parts.

An HD clutch should have a higher clamping force and a harder friction plate material.
In practice a heavier clutch pedal, and usually a more abrupt, less progressive clutch action.
Benny sums it up - if you're slipping a clutch in general driving due to a lot of towing or a lot of off roading maybe yes. A std OE clutch on a RRC or Disco should last 150,000>200,000km's
