    TD5 Flywheel

Has anyone fitted a Single Mass replacement flywheel to there TD5 Disco/Defender.

Is there any problems with this upgrade, because i might need to replace our flywheel if the clutch is knackered and thought that this may be an alterative.

I havent but I would be tempted.

I believe they increase harshness / vibration at tickover.

    cheers

Take a look at this article:
    Flywheels, Clutch

    It says in part:

Strongly recommended for towing or competition vehicles.
Billet Steel Flywheel , Replaces dual mass original
One piece construction for correct balance,
don't risk your transmission with inferior built up replacements.
Comes complete with clutch cover, friction plate, and heavy duty release bearing.
Version available with Racing 10.5" clutch, 500 ft lb capacity.
It is important to note that replacing a dual mass flywheel with a single
mass flywheel may increase transmission noise at idle (chatter).

    Hi Baz
Let us know if you get a price.
I would go the same way too, especially if cheaper than a new flywheel, mine sounds shocking till the clutch gets some heat into it.
Apparentley they are just starting to become an issue in the DID Pajaheros,BIG $$$ to replace.

Im interested in this If something that torque pulses like the isuzu has a single mass where as the td5 which in theory should have a gentler pulse due to one pot always being on power has a dual mass unit.

Be interesting to get a looksee at the 2 side by side.

The dual mass is there for a reason. The 3L Nissans have them too I believe.

I suspect you'll shorten the life of the rest of the drive train if you go down this path. You may not feel it, but the shock loads will still get fed into the gearbox bearings every revolution.

I think the 130 has an uprated dual mass clutch, that might be more appropriate for towing your camper. That's the way I intend to go whenever mine's due.

This problem has been going on for many years with toyota surf owners as the surfs have used a dual mass flywheel since the late 80's and tend to fly to pieces with great regularity costing over $1000 to replace. The most common fix is to replace the dual mass unit on the 2.4's with the solid flywheel from a 2.8. The only difference that has been found is a slighly louder "chatter" at idle, no difference to the longevity of the drive train at all, some having changed to solid flywheels 10 or more years ago.

I can get the clutch kit for $450 and the dual mass flywheel for $800, i'm now waiting for a reply to my e-mail on how much a single mass flywheel is.

Just got a reply of my e-mail, $1851.00 retail for the HD clutch and single mass flywheel
