Solid rivets from an aircraft parts supplier may not be as expenisive as you think.
I got some off these people - Aviaquip (Home) I think it was about $15 for a quarter of a pound which is a lot of rivets. Just ask for a really low grade i.e. cheap. Mine were 1100 grade alloy, made them nice and soft to put in too.
