    Cool Intercooler cleaning TD5 Manual

    Hi all
I recently removed the hose from the turbo to the intercooler on my '01 TD5 manual while chasing a water leak. The inside of the hose looked a bit oily so I would like to clean all the hoses and the intercooler. I hope that will give me a bit more go with a cooler air charge. I have imagined that the performance has dropped off a little from new. It has done 160000 klicks,
Question is - is there a simple way to accomplish this task or do I have to pull off/out most things as stated in manual.
Thanks for your help as I am sure someone has done all this before.

Start with the front number plate and dismantle the entire front end bodywork. Or at least it feels that way! No shortcuts that I am aware of.

its a pity there isnt some sort of cleaner that could be pumped through the intercooler to clean it out.

Years ago we used to use refrigerant r11 as a cleaner, but it has since been banned. It would have been excellent for the job.

Dont recon to many disco td5 inter coolers get cleaned out due to the size of the job.

Also do a search,i am sure there is an informative thread about it here somewhere.

    Hi Trackless
It is possible to remove the intercooler without removing the engine fan and radiator,Ive done so twice.
Follow the RAVE instructions but unclip the shroud, put it behind the fan,unbolt/unclip the radiator, lift and push back as close to the fan as possible,I only removed the main top hose. With a bit of swearing and grazed knuckles you can now eeze the intercooler out, still not easy!!!!
Look into an EGR removal kit,see the current group buy in "The Verandah".The EGR is responsible for alot of that crud, the other cause is blowby gasses.Look up Mahn and Hummel Provent in "The Good Oil".
I just use petrol to clean mine, ensure you blow the fumes out before re-fitting.

you can clean it in situ, and I have twice.

fit extension tubes to the intercooler hoses so they stick up nice and high,

fill it with diesel or the gentle solvent of your choice and let it sit.

    drain

fill with hot soapy water and then using a cooling system flush gun blow air through it

rinse with hot water and blow the air through again till it comes out no longer soapy.

if the rinse water comes out dirty repeat the wash again.

once its got clean rinse water coming out plug your wifes hair drier into the thing and let it blow through it for a couple of hours.

    done
