With 130 Dual Cabs can you have longer trays than Hilux dual cabs etc. ?

Folks as the 130 duel cabs have extended chassis does this mean legally you can put a longer tray on ?

Whats the longest tray your legally able to have on a 130 defender duel Cab...............dont need to carry lots of weight as such just like the room etc.

I am unsure whether this ruling is national or queensland specific but the rear overhang (defined as distance from centre of rear axle to rear most aspect) must be no more than 3.7 m or no more than 60% of wheelbase, whichever is less.
A 130 has a wheel base of 127", 60% of this is in metric 1935mm.

The rear wheels on a 130 are close to the rear of the cab, but from the centre of the rear axle, back 1.9m would put the overall tray length at somewhere near 2.2m. I havent measured this but can if you need to!

My tray is 1.8 x 1.8 and I have no departure problems or overhang issues, I would envisage a 2.2m tray although handy may "look" a little long?

I believe there is a member on AULRO with a singlecab camperback on a 130, it is just within legal limits and they are happy with it. Irrespective of the above I would argue a 130 will take a longer tray "better" than a hilux as a 130 doesnt have a toyota badge on it

this is a question of mine aswell, I have a decked out aluminium pod on a single cab ATM and would love to just switch it over to a 130 tray but have a feeling the 2.4m length of it may look a little silly not to mention give me a woeful depature angle.

If anyone has photos of ther tray set ups or even dimensions it would help. There seems to be a far bit of variation out there on the backs of 130's

How do you think a 2.1m tray would look ? do you think this would interfere with departure angles etc.

I have a feeling Hilux dual cab trays etc. are about 1.8m at most. an extra 30cm of tray would be handy and may not look too stupid ?

Standard tub is about 1700mm long from memeory, Hilux tubs are 1500mm I think. 2100mm would stick out the back a fair way, it depends how high you mount it, how much it will effect your departure angle.

    Cheers, Mick.

pc3 I did some measures, max legal rear overhang would make the total tray length about 2.7m (way too long practically)

I can see that 2.1m wont be too bad, the rear departure will be factored by the towbar not the tray edge.
The biggest issue with a 2.1m tray will be rear unsupported section, if you look at the hohars very sexy tray - where the towbar tongue goes into the receiver is level with the rear cross member / rear of chassis. So with a 1.8m tray there is already a fair unsupported length, obviously even more so with an extra 300mm.

Maybe you need some photoshop wizz to mock up the tray style you like in a few lengths to get an idea of where to go. I know this, whatever size tray you end up with you will fill it up!!!

We turn the tow hitch upside down when travelling as there is enought room there to do it...always have hitch while travelling as you never know what you may find
