Look at the Icom IC-440. Similar to some cheaper GME models but with one big plus as the speaker is also on the mic along with all the controls. The base unit can then be installed anywhere in the vehicle. and only the mic needs to be put somewhere. It also comes with a very long extension cord for the mic so you can put it anywhere.

I'd look at mounting the base unit behind or under the rear seats.

As dmdigital suggests, but you can also look at the Uniden UH400SX-RM, which may come in a bit closer to a tight budget.

I've got my UHF mounted on the front sloping face of the cubby, but if I had to replace it, I'd get one with all the controls in the microphone.

This a GME TX300, with controls on the mike. Unit size is very small 10cm Wide x 8 long, but has all the functions of a full sized unit and 5W output.

I used 3M double sided tape to stick it the facia panel. It has been there for 12 months and hasn't budged.

I ran the both the power wires and the ariel wire under the carpet straight to the battery compartment. The ariel wire the follows the standard wiring loom from the battery compartment, underneath the vehicle, then up to the engine bay and then out to the bull bar.

You pick one of these up on E Bay for about $300.00.

I'd recommend black silastic rather than double sided tape. After having used both the silastic is much better.

Drover: did you try and put the base station in behind the dash, theres a cavity in behind where you've hung the mic. May be an issue with the GME as you'd probably also need an external speaker then.

Correct, the speaker is in the base unit so it needs to be in the open. Further to that the microphone spiral cord runs straight from the front of the unit, so again it needs to be on the outside or the length of the cord would then be an issue.

The heavy duty 3M tape works a treat, provided you clean both surfaces properly it will hold a bull out to p....

I have mounted the remote head of my Uniden UH013 on a piece of ply (painted black) mounted to the underside of the cubby box. I have installed a cubby box from Rovercraft so I can butcher it if required. The main radio body is mounted under the driver's seat. I have an external speaker mounted to the left of the driver seat on the ply board as the main speaked is located in the main radio body under the seat. The external speaker could be mounted behind the dash low on the right hand side above the clutch pedal to hide it away.

The radio head does not foul gear lever operation of transfer lever operation. It works for me.

sweet svx you have there i have seen it getting around the hunter valley a bit i think!

as for UHF's dad ran a GME tx4200 in the isuzu county(very rattly) for at least 9 or so years and i took it and put it in my defender for about a year it was a excellent unit very basic and simple to use only problem ever had was it wiped the memory or something when we started the car with the unit turned on
i also had a uniden sundowner something or rather that also seemed ok but dont really like uniden
dad just got a GME tx3340 and it seems to be a good unit also
and i went out and bought a icom ic440 due to its compact design but now comparing it i wouldnt rave about it for the price the screen has a small problem and it is not as clear to hear as all the other units for some reason it also is a bit more complicated to use in that to quickly change channels you have to press the channel button and then keep pressing the up or down buttons where as with all the others you just turn the knob to select the channels or volume (not that its that bigger deal but it does get annoying) and it gets quiet frustrating so i am going to buy a icom 400pro for a variety of reasons
in the end i would say GME is the pick for price and quality
