    Puma trans oil

Anyone here with a Puma approaching 80K and not thought about changing out their MT82 oil, better hop to it. especially if it gets a hiding towing etc etc.
I did a 100K service on a 130 today and boy did it need the oil changed in the trans in fact it was about 20K over what i would've liked to leave it in there. LR have been telling the owner 'extended service life' and ' don't need to change it' but I would urge people to change it at the 80K service at the LATEST.

I bought this oil through LR because it was a short notice event, but I will be researching other supplies as it retails at $57/ L (Needs 2.4L)and to my surprise unpacked a LR carton to discover Castrol BOT382 bottles. Possibly cheaper from a Castrol rep???

Anyway. Oils cheap, so change it.

JC, someone asked me the other day about the Castrol BOT130M oil and when I found the service schedule I was shocked to see 200,000km for the g/box OCI

It does also say 20,000km/12 months replacement for the transmission fluid (and I'm assuming they mean the manual gearbox) under severe service, and I'd classify towing under that.
I've listed the service schedule below.

If you can't buy in bulk form Castrol try a Ford dealer, pretty sure it's the same 75W-90 GL4 fluid used in some Transit's, Fiesta's, etc.

[edit] Noticed you mentioned BOT382, does that supersede BOT130 ?

[2nd edit] I've already uploaded the BOT 130M TDS in this thread Gearbox oil BOT 130 substitute ?

Thanks Rick, and HI! Yes there is NO WAY I would be 200K servicing these gearboxes with only 2.5 l oil capacity and 360Nm and 2.5T of vehicle

I assumed that BOT 382 is a superceded one, as the US Mustang sites are talking of an improved genuine supplied oil that resolves some shifting issues with their MT82's, so that may well be the case.

I wasn't (Annd niether was the owner) too fussed about having to fork out as it is cheaper than a new trans

I was considering using a Syntrax etc but be it on my head if there is a problem, so I used genuine stuff. Probably would in my own vehicle too, for that reason. Its not like it needs 20 litres of the stuff!

    Hi Justin !

My recommendation, for the little its worth, is to use the OE stuff until warranty has expired, then the first fluid I'd try would be Motul Gear 300 (only about $30/litre) and then go from there.

I just changed all my oils as the defender (18,000Miles) gets used a lot for towing the caravan and boat. The oils mentioned in the Puma spec sheets are the minimum spec required, so you can use better oils to safeguard your landrover.

I used Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil in the transfer box and Millers Oils CRX 75w90 NT Competition full synthetic transmission oil for the gearbox. As for the diffs I use either a generic gear oil (Molytex EP90), Millers Oils Classic Differential Oil 90 (Formerly Classic EP 90 GL5) or the Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil.
And under the bonnet I used an Ester based Fully synthetic, Fuchs Titan Race Pro S 5W-30 Ester Synthetic Engine Oil.

    Capacities:
    1. Front diff : 1.7litres
    2. Rear diff : 110 = 2.26litres, 90 = 1.7litres
    3. Transfer Box: 2.3litres
    4. MT82 Gear Box: Initial Fill = 2.4litres GL4 Fully Synthetic, Service Fill = 2.2 litres It is important that you do not overfill the MT82 gearbox after the initial fill as about 200ml does not drain out.

Thanks Brian, I actually had heard all sorts of stuff about service and total fill etc, so I just measured what i took out and put the same amount back in. Incidentally, was a fraction over 2.4 litres.

Brian the problem is that LR specify a particular specification fluid for the g/box, if you don't use it and have an issue they can revoke warranty.

The BOT130 is a full syn fluid made to a Ford spec.

The thing is we don't know what and why the additive package is.
Some manual gearboxes use funky materials like carbon facings for the synchro cones, etc. which require dedicated friction modifiers for the best synchro function
If the MT82 uses conventional bronze style synchro's, my first go to fluids in 75W-90 are either Motul Gear 300 or Australian Castrol Syntrax (which is a different formulation to the UK Syntax, the Oz version is an ester/PAO full syn)

Your recommendations are worth quite a bit Rick! This vehicle is out of warranty period now,I will try the Motul then next time, on non in warranty vehicles. I have a local seller of this stuff so will ask them for prices .

    Hope you are well.

Maybe I should ask Ashtrans about the makeup of the insides of the MT82? Perhaps he can then shed some light on the possible use of Syntrax etc?

JC, I'm kicking myself that I didn't change the oils earlier as the gearbox was the only part that contained the correct fluid levels as per the workshop manual. Both Diffs were lacking oil and the Transfer box had to much.
