I recently converted my 5spd 1997 defender ute to Auto. Just my impressions at this stage after about 2 weeks of driving. Drives well with no issues. Im running the defender transfer and cant fault it at this stage. I dont have a tacho but calibrated ear would indicates that it does not over rev at 100 kph. Also the lock up occurs at 80kph indicated which equates to about 75kph + - on the gps. All said and done more than happy with a reasonabley easy conversion.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does "locks up" refer to?

The torque converter in the auto trans has an internal clutch that is engaged by the trans at 80km/h to stop slippage. Saves fuel on cruise.Originally Posted by Ranga
