Question Allisport or Allard td5 intercooler?

    Hi all
I'm looking to upgrade my intercooler on my td5 defender.
Has anyone installed either the Allisport or Allard intercoolers from the uk?

    I have a remapped ecu and 3 " exhaust.
I've been told the later model td5, mines an 05 model, don't need a larger intercooler as they have a larger one compared to earlier td5's.

    Is this true?
I've measured mine and the two upgraded units are larger, but I'm wondering how much more bang I'm gonna get from my bucks?

    Thanks
    Mick

Not sure about Defender having different size intercoolers this is the case with Discoveries but not Defenders to my knowledge.

I fitted an Allisport intercooler and have had no issues I think it achieved the desired result.
Ring Andrew and discuss it with him I find him to be nice bloke with integrity and he seems to stand by his products.
Also if you really want to make a difference fit a VNT from Bell Auto Services.

I have also ordered an Allisport Intercooler for my MY05 Defender with A/C
(you must specify with or without A/C) they are a bit snowed under for xmas rush & with the good Aussie $$ lost of orders from AU.

Actually cheaper for us to buy them than the Poms because the 20% VAT the UK pay is slightly more than the Freight to AU & we dont get stung the VAT (or import duty)

Im very happy with my Td5 performance as it is, Im only concerned that my EGT's easily go over 700 when I'm towing our Van, If I get at least 30 -50 c benifit from the larger intercooler I'll be very happy.

(My Tip, if you dont already have one fit a Provent 200, seriously reduces the amount of oil collecting in your new intercooler)

Meybe a VNT later but can't push the freindship with Dept of Finance too much all at once.

The reason I like it is not so much that it might or might not reduce soot as the centrifuge takes care of that, but that the oil is not going back into the intake pre turbo - intercooler.

I get about 150 -200ml oil from my drain ( I have a drain hose & tap on the bottom rather than going back into sump) every 5000klm , I crack the tap when I grease my props, mid service

Some of that oil is otherwise going to be coating the inside of the intercooler & settling on the bottom. Before I fitted my provent I poured about 200 ml oil out of my intercooler, (@150,000klm) havent checked it since. All that gunge is going to be detrimental to standard small intercooler, may not affect a large performance intercooler so much.

Thanks for the tip. I'll grab one of those. Sounds like a good investment.
What sort of set up have you currently got on your deefer?
Have you had ecu remapped & exhaust diameter?
I'm interested how your truck goes after the instal.

Have you got long to wait.
Are you putting it in yourself?
If its ok, can I sit in on the instal & learn how it all goes in?
Also keen to see how the provent is installed.

I can pm you my mobile if ok?
    Cheers

The AliSport intercooler is twice the size of the stock late model TD5 intercooler, which is same as the PUMA's.

Mine has been in over 2 years, noticeable performance increase and no issue with it. Been on some big trip and has held perfectly.

Once you see one in the flesh you can't help but be impressed with the build quality.

    AliSport all the way.

Currently have Tombie stage1 remap courtesy of PO, EGR & associated plumbing removed, decat 2 1/2" exhaust with 3" center muffler .

EGR over 700 is possible if WOT up a long steep hill trying to maintain 100, but EGR very easily goes over 700 on any long hill with caravan, Hume Melb to Sydney at 110 with van is a pain as I'm constantly one eye on the EGR.

Proper outback touring wont matter so much because no pressure to stay at highway speeds

Andrew said he'd try to get the intercooler to me before Xmas in which case I'll take it to Sydney and fit it there as I'll be otherwise bored with nothing to do but watch Syd - Hobart start & NYE fireworks otherwise I'll be fitting when it arrives after about 10 Jan.

Mick, Pm your ph no but if your not about I'll take install pics.

Provent pics below if it helps, I know this is not the normal location, another different idea that works for me.

Home made bracket, easily undone if needed.

Red hose is ebay 7/8 Oil transfer hose, wrapped with heat insulation where applicable, has survived well.

    I know , I know ... I've got a leaky manifold gasket ......... again

Provent drain tap on end of 6" hose, as seen from underneath

    cheers Don

Alisport, Allard, Brunel Performance - those three are all much of a muchness.

The main difference (from memory) is the space between the fins.

If memory serves me right the Brunel one will fit air-con and non-aircon TD5 Defers and has slightly greater spacing between fins than the Alisport one. Sorry I cant remember the Allard details, we never sold many of those.

We used to sell a lot of the Brunel units as they were easier to clean the crud out of them after they'd had a mud dunkin'. Thermal efficiency was ever so slightly less, but nothing you'd ever notice.

Both Andrew at Alisport and John at Brunel are very approachable people and offer top quality products.
