Puma - overfill of fuel tank?

Quick/ stupid one – 2010 Puma 110 - filled up with diesel the other day, afterwards noticed diesel dripping down the side of the fuel tank onto the forecourt floor.

Is this normal? Is there an overflow path? If not I shall get the dealer to investigate?

OK I filled it right up, but not so much that it was coming out the filler neck (duh)

    Thanks, Sam

I always fill up to first click. It makes calculating consumption a bit more accurate

I don't think they should do that. It's possible the large rubber hose that goes from the filler to the tank has come loose or is leaking or that your fuel tank breather has been dislocated or leaking. Or alternatively there is a large round rubber seal on the top of the tank where the sender bolts in, that might be leaking. But it should not be possible to cause the tank to overflow with a normal filler hose.

Oh and if you do have a way for fuel to leak out - you also now have a way for water to seap in. Water in the fuel tank on a PUMA is a VERY expensive repair bill, several thousand dollars. I know because there was a batch of MY09 models that had a factory fault with the position of the breather that slowly sucked in water spray from the wheels. Destroyed the fuel system, was given a $15,000 bill until I could prove they had a manufacturing fault with the breather location.

    Second for the breather.
I've had mine replaced twice under warranty so far the latest one hasn't leaked.
No fuel tank should leak no matter how far you fill it up.

Look for a small diameter black plastic hose that curls around like a hockey stick. That's the breather, my guess is the fuel will be leaking out of there.

It can be found by looking under the wheel arch near the filler. It should be tucked behind/inside some kind of shielding to stop road grit getting into the end of the hose.

Personally if you don't care about warranty, I'd put a small fuel filter in the breather line and then extend it up as high as possible.

I distinctly remember the sinking feeling when I got that bill and the arrogant arse holes at the dealer who could not see a problem with a dangly hose sucking into the fuel tank hanging behind the rear wheel. Even when the breather was chock full of wet muddy water.

I might be a bit bitter and twisted....

Its doing it again - leaking fuel from the little hockeystick shaped tube coming out of the breather hose by the rear wheel (see my hand in the pic, holding the tube)

OK, so i brimmed the tank... but still dont expect fuel all over the forecourt???

I got under the car and found no other leaks - LR had previously changed the overflow hose (1" hose?) connection up near the filler.

    What should i do?

In my case the breather filter thing was blocked. It related to a full tank, but I cant recall if the one click or chocker to the filler cap made a difference.
The inline breather filter is a two way thing I'm told by LR, so have no idea how that works. But after mine was replaced I got my self some locker air pipe, heated it up slightly and forced it over the factory hockey stick. It seemed the easiest was with the limited space to work with, and the strength of the original pipe bite on the filter stork. Then I ran the pipe along and up to behind the cab. Well away from dust and water. To finish it of I again heated the tube and put my own small hockey stick on the end. 2.5 years later and a lot of dust I have had no issues. My original block came bout after several water crossing and then dirt roads.
