For some strange reason (saving some money, possibly), LR decided to replace the traditionale brackets for the A-frame, the ones that are bolted to the chassis, with welded brackets.
Now they have found out that with time (but not much time has passed, one year or so...) the welded brackets may not be up to the job, resulting in the rear axle going astray, with inevitable disappointment of the driver, who finds himself driving a car with a will of its own. It seems that the first vehicles are exempted, as probably LR still had some of the old brackets as stock, and that later ones are exempted too, as they reverted to the old system; in between, from VIN 736064 up to VIN 752152, all defenders should be inspected and, if the case be, rectified, by welding additional patches to the already welded brackets. Actually talking to my local landrover mechanic few weeks ago and he said he had an 07 driver actually pull into hi garage off the road as his steering totally locked up and he couldn't steer properly
i believe this was the reason but i cant say that for sure ![]()

New technical bulletin regarding brake vacuum pump (LTB00177 Report post
The following appeared today in the GTR. Appears that the pump specs has been changed again and now includes a gasket. Includes up to MY2009 No.LTB00177v3 21 April 2009 Reissue: Please replace the previous edition of this bulletin. This bulletin supersedes TSB LTB00177v2/2008 dated 27 October, which should either be destroyed or clearly marked to show it is no longer valid (e.g. with a line across the page). Subject/Concern: Brake Vacuum Pump Seal Oil Leak Models: Defender (LD) 2.4L Diesel 2.4L Diesel VIN-range: 7A732615-9A779263 Markets: All Section: 206-07 Summary: Oil leaking from the brake vacuum pump front oil seal. This version has been issued for a change in the Causal Part and End VIN. ‘A’ Frame Suspension Arm Publication No.: 204-Q055 Model: Defender Model Year: 2009 VIN Range: LD771715 – LD772545 Date of Issue: 03 February 2009 Expiry Date: 28 February 2011 RE: ‘A’ Frame Suspension Arm Dear Colleagues In plant quality inspections have determined that on a number of 2009MY Defender vehicles, the 'A' frame top link arm bushes at the chassis bracket location end of the arm can rotate due to a potential ovality/oversize of the bore in which the bush is installed. Customers may experience vibration and a noise likely to be a whine. Action to be taken At the next service opportunity you are requested to visually inspect and repair if necessary. The workshop procedure is attached as Appendix 1. Please ensure all unsold vehicles are repaired prior to handover to the customer. A number of vehicles have been reworked at the factory prior to dispatch and can be identified by a white square sticker in the corner of the windshield; no further action is required on these vehicles. Please check DDW to ensure that the vehicle is affected by this Service Action prior to undertaking any rework action. DDW will be updated to reflect only those vehicles affected. Should you require a listing of the affected vehicles, please contact the Land Rover Field Actions team by e-mail.
