    Getting off Bad Debt Register

Our daughter went to get a new phone contract and found that she's on a bad debt register.

She has no idea why or from where. How can she find that out to get it resolved?

    Gday Ron,

It'll be Veda Advantage, who basically look after Credit Referencing in Australia.
You can pay about $30 and get a credit report sent to email almost straight away, or no fee and they will post it to her.
This will show who the debt is to, when it was put on there, possibly what it is for.
If it's not hers or it has been paid, she can get it amended/removed depending on what it is.
website is here Discover your credit history - My Credit File - Australia

There are quite often mistakes or incorrect info on these.
If you want a hand understanding it, or sorting it PM me or give me a buzz.
    Cheers

I think it's appalling that you have to pay to see your credit history!

    You don't.

You can apply to get one for free but it takes up to 30 days or something.

The pay one is to receive it immediately.

I still think that's appalling. I think I should be able to get it instantly for free.

It may not be an outstanding debt, you can be flagged if you have been knocked back for credit, I would pay the $30 and get the info ASAP, Regards Frank.

    No you can't.
Credit reports never show the result of applications, only that you made an application, who with and how much it was for.
Black marks/flags etc whatever you want to call them are only for non payment (over 3 mths) or unpaid debts, defaults and judgements.

It could be that they didn't word her rejection correctly.

I got knocked back many years ago by AGC for a 12 months interest free deal through a furniture retailer. As it was the weekend they couldn't/wouldn't give me any more detail but implied I had bad debt.

I followed up on the Monday and it turned out that they knocked me back because I'd had a high number of recent credit checks - I'd just bought a house so there was the bank, phone put on so another, gas & electricity - another two, and so forth. They didn't care what the checks were for, just that I'd had what they considered a risky number.
