Waste vegie oil and TDi - anyone done it / doing it?
Ok, I've found myself what seems a nice 97 Disco 300TDi (Bosch pump thankfully). I've secured a plentiful source of FREE WVO. I've scoured the net for information and now I'm just plain confused.
At this point the most feasible and by far the easiest is simply mixing with a % of diesel 70:30 / 80:20 seems the most I've seen in that scenario. However, people always talk about making sure the oil is filtered (I can knock something up for that easy enough) and "de-watered". How do you dewater? So, the point of this is simple. Has / is anyone on this forum using WVO in this manner. How do you treat your oil? What mix do you use? More importantly, what problems have you had. I'm really keen to give this a go as a) I'll be doing my bit for the environment (keeps my conscience happy) and b) I'll be saving mega $ (keeps my wallet happy). I realise I'm only new here but is anyone can help I would really, really appreciate it. Cheers, Andy |

I haven't heard of anyone mixing WVO and diesel and using it, I guess it could work don't know though. I have a mate who has converted his 300Tdi to run straight WVO, He filters it down to 5microns i think and then puts it into a heated tank in the boot. The whole system has been rigged up so that it warms up on diesel and switches to WVO, The turbo timer then switches back to diesel and shuts down. He hasn't used it much as he's having trouble sourcing the oil, Its far easier to go down to SAFF and buy Bio from the bowser. The bloke who brought my Disco, makes his own Bio from mixing methanol and WVO and a few other things. Costs him $0.25 per litre. You need a decent garage and some know how. Why when asking about using WVO does someone always tell you how to make biodiesel? That wasn't the question was it?
I have converted my 97 Disco to run on WVO using a two tank system. I know of two others in Qld running similar systems without complaint so far. I start the car on diesel and when up to temp I change to WVO. When nearing the end of the journey I switch back to diesel to purge the IP of any WVO before switching off. The fumes don't smell like a fish shop but more like burning parafin. It is quite inoffencive and produces less particulate matter and CO2 than diesel. I filter the oil to 2 micron. I start by running it through a coles green bag to remove the big bits and solid fats then a series of filter socks at 50, then 5 micron. Filter socks are available on ebay or through Vegie Cars. I then leave it to settle in 200L barrels before filtering through a home made version of this system at 2 micron YouTube - Episode 6: The One Shot Filtration Unit Demonstration You can put one together for a fraction of the price they want to sell it for. There are three heating elements in my system. The first is wrapped around a CAV filter to ensure the oil flows easily through the filter. The second heats the oil to around 80C before the IP. The third should theoretically not be required but another guy running on WVO said that his 300tdi ran much better with the inclusion of injector line heaters, so I have done the same. There is some talk of problems arrising from having WVO in steel fuel tanks causing fuel lines or filters to become blocked. It seems that most users are now using plastic tanks or having their steel tanks treated with a coating inside. I have however seen a news report that the British army in Iraq were blending WVO from their mess hall with diesel to run their vehicles. I am using a 20L plastic water container in the boot as no fuel is returned to it. Veggie oil - using it on a 93 Tdi
Just filled up for the first time at Thomastown in Melbourne at $1.40 a litre. Retail outlet that is recycling fish n chip oil. Seems ok so far. I'll post economy - efficiency figures next time I top up. Easier for me than mixing chemicals and palying around with filters. Much cheaper doing it yourself I know but not a bad easy to fill compromise.

Thanks for all the info. I've now got my car (yippee ) and I've done my research. I've got a WVO source. So, over the next few weekends I'll be putting it all together and seeing what happens. I'll keep you all posted.Cheers, Andy |

I've heard of someone using that method, 70:30 WVO
iesel in an older land cruiser. No word back from him yet as to whether his is indirect or direct injection etc (not sure what year his is). He started with closer to 30:70 then gradually worked his way up to 70:30. I'm not sure if he needs to purge the lines or not. I suppose it would depend on the ratio you use. I'm looking at doing the same thing with my disco, more like 50:50 to keep it thin... but i'm holding off till he gets back to me! |
