New Camping gear
Had a chance to test our new camping gear this week , went down to Busselton WA for five days camping in the wet and windy weather. We had two tents one a black wolf turbo 300 and the other a oztent plus. both very good tents easy to set up ( 15mins for both ) turbo 300 very roomy ,well made , I took this photo of both plus 110 with a fish-eye lens.

Which tent to buy?
In my opinion, you can't go past a good quality centre pole tent. I have had this one for about 3 years now, and still love it. The tent is from Freedom camping in Melbourne. Takes five minutes to set up, and take down. Kept us warm and dry in the tropical rains of Cape York, to 40+ knot winds in Wyalla SA. The only complaint I have is the volume it takes up while packed. 900 x 900 x 200. The poles fit nicely under the rear seat of the Defender. The canvass tent is a bit heavy for me alone to get up on to the roof racks, so it has to go inside the vehicle.

Have a look at page 34 of this link: eGear
There's a few others in the preceding pages too but they aren't a nice orange colour.

After the frustrations of setting up a family size dome tent, I realised it was time to get something faster.
I borrowed a neighbours centre pole tent with extended back for a trip to Robe earlier this year and was convinced the quick set up was the way to go when travelling with kids. The centre pole design limits layout a bit, and the canvas tent is very heavy, so I looked at other options. I narrowed it down to the OzTent and the Blackwolf Turbolite Plus. The Oztent would have been my preffered option if travelling alone, it's much faster to set up, and it looks like an annexe, so you can even set it up in a truck stop when you stop for lunch. The down side was (1) Price, (2) Size (Length) - especially for a tent to sleep 5 people (3) Weight (4) limited head room, as it quickly dipped low. The Blackwolf Turbolite Plus range offered the weight savings, and the extra room. As well as packing slightly shorter in length, but still a roof rack item. A couple of weeks ago I ordered 3 x Blackwolf Turbolite 300Plus tents and 1 x 300Twin tent; as I managed to talk some mates into it. Everyone was happy with their tents (yet to be used - but soon). Except that mine had 3 holes in it! I sent pics to the supplier, who contacted Blackwolf and they sent a replacement tent without even bothering to verify the pics. Unfortunately that too had some quality control issues (loose tape), but again that was immediately replaced. In my research I'd heard good things about both the OzTent and the Blackwolf tent, but what really counted was that nobody had issues with the way these companies dealt with warranty problems. |

I realise that Mrs Ho Har is off chasing pirates, but I did promise a pic of the Black Wolf Turbo 210. Here it is with a couple of wild cats near it. This is the first time we've actually used it and it was very easy to erect and pack up, a one person job. As with all tents the sand-fly proof mesh blocks the wind quiet well but we were both very pleased with it overall.
