    Solar power for our Camper

I’ve just finished my latest project for our now solar powered camper trailer.

We bought two Unisolar US-64 panels in September so that we could camp indefinitely at unpowered campgrounds. The Unisolar panels have lots of advantages over some of the others that are available. The only disadvantage they have is their size (for power output).

We took one of them with us when we spent a week at Giraween. The problems with the size of the panel became evident quite quickly as I moved the panel to catch the sun – it was very awkward. I also worried about the panel being damaged while being propped up on the ground.

Since then, I have been designing and redesigning a way to mount the panels on our camper trailer. There were a few options, but this is what I decided would suit us and our trailer.

I went for an aluminium frame to keep the weight down and avoid having to paint or powder coat it. Another important requirement was that it had to be able to be disassembled quickly and be easily stored in the trailer without taking up too much space.

We’re heading off for two weeks on Sunday relying on the sun to keep the battery charged and the fridge cold. I’ll report back on how it all works out.

    I thought yours were Unisolar.
They were still available in September, but once out of stock, that was it - no more. I'm not sure if they are available again. The supplier we got ours from were not expecting to see any for a long time, if at all.

This is one of the reasons we chose the Unisolar panels .
