Free/Cheap Camping?

Hi I used to have a converted Ford bus set up as a motor home. I insured it with the C.M.C.A. motor home club. This organisation has a great database of free camping spots Australia wide. Data base comes with descriptions, how to get there and lists amenities and costs if any.

We are always looking for new places,We are over caravan parks, trendy resorts and large crowds. I'm sure there are spots out there we can share with each other? Seems to me a database for Land Rover owners could be a good thing?

This might include pictures, track, maps, reviews of National parks, fishing etc.

I think that we all live close to good spots for a weekend away or just a drive, without even knowing they are there. I spent a year exploring Vic. in the bus and hardly touched the surface. Sure its the same in all the other states.

Just a suggestion, not sure if its been done befor. No longer a member of the motor home club and never got around to printing out their database.(Anyone got the pass word?).

Andrew

Stanage Bay, Central QLD.

Drive 70 km north of Rockhampton, take a right onto Stanage Bay Rd (100km of dirt corrugations and cattle grids).

Camping is free anywhere there, just leave a small donation at the Plumbtree Store.

Couple of pics attached.

Motor home bliss

CMCA is an excellent site with lots of info, and great people,, I miss being a member at the moment,,

Andrew, do you still have your M/Home ?,, I have an old Bedford which I'm in the "slow" proccess of rebuilding from the ground up. Cant wait to finish it and then explore all of Aus, and follow the sun,, (I was supposed to start this trip/lifestyle 2 years ago,, but life gets in the way sometimes, )

Strange Bay looks like a great little spot,,

Theres heaps of excellent free camping along the Murray River, spots right on the side of the road, and if you go into the TSR's (Travelling Stock Reserves) there are even better places, with alot more space and some really good beaches too,,

Hi Andrew
There are a few books listing all the free camping spots both state based and aussie wide.Look in the book are of your local camping store.
Problem is everybody has a copy.
You will find the grey nomads break camp at daybreak in order to find a spot early at the next stop.So in peak tourism dates you may not get a spot,off-peak should be easier.
ENJOY

Sadly no had to sell it, was good fun but 30 yo buses require lots of work to keep them on the road. If I was to do it again I would start from scratch with all new running gear so I never had to worry. Good luck with your bus.

Have a look at the "Australian 4WD Destinations" part of AULRO. I reckon we would have a really good knowledge base there If we all threw in a destination or two into the areas.

Or is that area only for 4WD-specific camping areas, non-2wd accessible?
