What would be right or wrong with these fridges?

Not interested in an Engel/Waeco debate - I know about these fridges so please leave them out of the discussion.

What are the merits or otherwise of these fridges.

intresting but what are the domus compressors that other fridges use ??
and the rr price $2.599 ?? for an 80 ltr ?

Good price - looks the goods by the photos.
Danfoss is actually the compressor most of the "quality" fridges use. ( cept Engel)
3.5A current draw efficient ? it's not really, for an 80Litre fridge, and surely it's not continuous but only when the compressor is running.
Be interested to know how it acts as a warmer, that's novel for a compressor fridge - - do they reverse cycle it somehow ?

I'd like a recommendation from someone who'd had one for a while before buying one.

If you google "domus", you will find a few fridges use them.
I thought it might just be a typo of "danfoss", but domus compressors do exist.
I didn't search for long enough to find much useful info about them.

This fridge uses a Maki Compressor but when I googled it I basically got no information other that a lot of people also asking what a Maki compressor is. On one forum a retailer indicated it was a really a Domus compressor which are no near as efficient as a Danforce and use a lot more power. The one guy I found who actually had one was only using it to keep his meat cool in a spare room and never actually used it on a trip.

All so confusing.

being cfc free it will also be running either r404 or r407 as the refirgerant which is not as good as the older r134a so the compressor will run for slightly longer than an older r134 or r12 gassed fridge. (damnit cant mention those names here)

the upshot of this is that should it ever need a regas almost any recently certified aircon installer should be able to gas it up for you.

3.5amps is what the compressor will draw while its running the kicker is that thats not entirely accurate...

the motor has a 50w draw. the low voltage cutout is set at 9v at 9v it will be running at 5.5amps.

The parts only warrenty rings bells for me but on paper it should be a good fridge especially at the price the one in question sold at.

My Mobikool chinese jobbie stilling going strong and took a pounding in the back of the 101 at Stockton and worked beautifully in the 40 degree heat.
The 101s are not the best riding things bouncing over the dunes.

Ended up buying a 55 l fridge/freezer from E-bay - cost $499. I have used it once away camping and it ran perfectly and seemed to have low power usage and also pulled temps down really quickly - froze my Crownies .

When researching I looked at Engel - somewhere around $1800, Waeco a little cheaper and Evakool - could have bought on special for $900. Asked a lot of questions on various forums and generally those who had them raved over them and those who poo pooed them were owners of brand names - they said they use too much power, will break down, quality control is crap etc etc etc. They certainly seem to sell like hot cakes on ebay and little problems seemed to be raised on the forums - plenty of Engel and Waeco stuff though.

Well mine is built well, is very quiet (cannot hear it), certainly works well and seems to be economical on power. My main complaint is that the freezer side is about 40litres and the fridge side at about 15 litres is just a little small - however the fridge can be operated as all fridge, all freezer or a mix.

I have a car starter power pack with a 24Ah battery in it so I decided how long the fridge will run on it. Temps in my house are 30 daytime, 20 night. The fridge is empty and does not have additional insulation. I have set the temp at 4 degrees to mimick fridge usage rather than freezer. It has not been opened and closed like you would when it is in use (should have opened and closed once per hour). However in real life it would be full of cold food that would aid in keeping things cool once everything was cool - though cold food would be loaded to the fridge would not have to pull the temp down - just maintain it. Inside fridge temp on start was 27.

So far, the fridge has been operating for 19 hours and cycles between 4 to -1 based on its own temp display - should have also put my own temp probe in but the temp has been shown to be accurate when measured at the bottom of the freezer.

So after 19 hours the power pack it still powering the fridge and still reads 13v. This would indicate that in the above circumstances the cheap ebay fridge is using less than 1 amp per hour over all - the specs indicate 5 amps when the compressor is working.

I will let you know when the power pack recharge light comes on which is about 12.2V and 50% charge. So only about 12Ah will have been used. The fridge switches itself off at 11.1v.

I need to make (or buy) an insulating cover for it to get even better efficiency.

Garry, see if you can get the seller to send you a few pics of the compressor and surrounding pipework, I did this on a similar eBay fridge, they sent plenty of pics. The pipework and welding was pathetic, with daggy looking welds and copper pipes with kinks in the bends and everything held in the case with zip ties and wire twist ties, the workmanship was appalling. I would bet that at the first corrugated road the whole interior would fail and you dont want that on a run. If the seller will not or can't supply pics of the workings, then I would be wary, good luck, Regards Frank.
