DIY Rooftop tent - ideas?
Hi all,
Now that I have bought my trailer, im thinking of having a rooftop tent (RTT) set up on it. However, all are too small in size, and those that arent are over $2k!! So, the idea would be to build a fold out base, same length and width as trailer, then unfolding to effectively double to trailer floor area. The design would be similar to a RTT (3 poles). Anyone done this, or have ideas on how one would go about building ones own RTT? Another option would be the Maggiolina type, except here I would be limited by floor space, but still an option. And another option the cheap Quechua 2 second tent (Quechua - 2 Seconds III, green - camping-trek,outdoor products tents - Designed for *hiking camping for 3 hikers looking for an instant pitch tent.) Cheers, PS: Pics are a must

There are a few folk that use the pop-up tents on roof racks here. Fine for occassional camping in good weather.
I've been considering making my own tent top for the trailer, that way it can be the size and design that I want. I've decided on three main ideas: 1) Roof top tent on the trailer: Limited sitting/cooking/eating space (essential as it rains everytime we go anywhere). May as well leave the trailer at home and stick the tent on teh roof (which I don't want, don't like ladders ![]() 2) As you say, extend the floor over the side of the trailer: Sleep on the "new" floor, maybe room in the trailer bed for sitting and cooking? 3) Pull the tent up over the rear of the trailer: Similar to a RTT but coming over the rear of teh trailer, cooker mounted beneath the bed/rear tailgate. I've done a lot of google image searches and keep coming up with different ideas. For us we need a good living/kitchen area and quick pitching time. Ideally I'd like to be able to pitch it for a quick sleep-over, and have the option to set-up camp for longer stays. I shall follow this thread with interest

Why do not use a Jacharoo gazebo from Kmart for the campers kitchen and a tent or the Kamp Rite tent cot over the trailer?

For what it's worth...saw an Oztent RV2 the other day attached to a home made camper trailer (7x4 I believe). was arranged on an oversize top with provision for it to fold out so that the solid floor was 2100 x2050. the 2100 x 850 extended flap of floor attached with three separate and equally spaced piano hinges. the bloke simply folded the floor inboard, folded the tent floor and collapsed the tent then covered the lot with what looked to be a hvy dty PVC cover. Said he got the cover stitched up by a local sail maker!
The RV2 sells for about $900 Tent was up in about a minute and another 5 mins to peg out the annexe part. |
