9/16 inch. Make sure u use a ring spanner to crack them. Thanks BigJon, memory slip there.

This is a pain. I think i found it easier to removed the diff end so i could move the uni joint to get the best access to the nuts. Other than that it is not too difficult to move the car forward or backward while under the car.

One of mine was rounded but i managed to belt a 14mm ring spanner on with a hammer. I replaced all mine with new nylock nuts that were 14mm with the same thread. This also gave marginally more room to move with the spanner.

Another tip, use a trolley jack with 2 bits of flat timber under / just forward of the join between the transfer case and gear box. Strap the gear box and TC to the jack with a tie down strap. I've pulled the gear box and transfer case out separately as well and i think it is more dangerous as it is difficult to balance each part. When the TC and the GB are still bolted together they balance the weight between them.

You will also need to turn the gearbox on its side to drag it out from the drivers side with the gear stick facing you. You'll have to jack the car up on the drivers side to get enough clearance to fit it under the sills. The reason it is drivers side is because the drum on the back of the TC makes it hard to tilt the other way.

I've removed and re installed a gearbox 5 times from under a RRC. If you have any questions feel fee to drop me a PM. Don't forget to drop the oil from the gear box. Make it much lighter. More important don't forget to put oil back in before driving. Spigot bushes are really cheap get a new one too. I didn't ddo these things, hence the reason i've done it to many times. Do it right he first time.

The nut size is 3/8 unf. Even if every other bolt on the box is metric! Rover must have a warehouse full of the buggers! LOL
