Question RRC 81 Water Temp (and other things)

    All,

No I've got the Yella Devil back on the road, there's a few things I still need to do:

    * Just wondering where your Water temp needle sits on the dash? Mine sits too high, I would have thought. I've just replaced the sender/ transmitter to factory. The previous owner had used a non-standard gauge but I wanted to get it back to the dash. (See attached). I replaced the theromstat about 18 months ago (but the cars been off the road for most of that). I think it was around the 86C mark? It doesn't move move (but there's not much room to move upwards which is the worrying factor) but I would have though it would be sitting the otherside of 1/2 way?

    * Also, does anyone have spare warning light covers for the Handbrake and Parking Lights they want to get rid of. Mine have disappeared over the years, apparently! (example attached) Maybe even the number plate lights and Smith's Oil Pressure Gauge too??!!!

    * And, are there any tricks (i.e. to make it really easy?!) in removing the front windowscreen to replace the seals and re-installing?

    TIA

    Is your fuel gauge correct?

Sometimes the incorrect gauge position is caused by the failure of the voltage regulator in the back of the cluster.

Tip off is if the gauges change when you turn on the headlights.

AFAIK there are no tricks with the windscreen. Seeing they are laminated they crack very easily, and if the seal is old and brittle it is very easy for an unknown crack under the rubber to spread across before your disbelieving eyes. I now always get a fitter to do it, since although they charge a bit, if they break it they replace it. That is my trick.

My temp gauge only gets up there on a 35 deg day or lugging around in low range. It normally sits about 5mm from the other end line. Sorry can't help with the others.

Gday like others have said re temp gauge best bet is to go see an auto sparky they have a thing which will mesure the ohms of your gauge and sender and will give you an idea of how hot it realy is and they should be able to tell you that if you solder in a resistor in line it will make the gauge read corect and they can tell you the value of the resistor needed from the unit they use to testyour gauge and sender ...

As for the other bits your after send me a pm of what your after and your details and il find what ya after i have a few of them here somewere

I did wonder about the regulator but I don't know anything about them really - but the fuel gauge only read 3/4 full when I know the tank is full. The tank float is only relatively new too. I must say, I haven't noticed the dials move when the lights are switched on but I'll check tonight.

Is the regulator replacable or should I keep my out out for a newer model dash (still with the angle drive though) to get the tacho too, etc?

    The regulator is replaceable.
I do not know how much work it is to install the later dash. You would have to probably get the plug with it and then splice all the wires at the plug.
Then you could run a tacho wire to the alternator, and have a field wire added to the alternator to run the tach, then hope the pulley sizes are the same as the later model.

    Sounds a lot of work!

Will try getting a replacement regulator first!!

    Thanks Philip

    Your using a 86c thermostat

Being a carby version V8 ... I think the original is 78 degrees .. This will obviously drop the gauge lower

I'm running this thermo (78) & the car loves it

    I agee with all ^^^^.

Also check the earthing. An earth leekage will upset things as relative voltage and resistance will become variable with load.

I'll check the earthing too. I assume it's the earthing generally (i.e. from battery) or do you mean specifically from the cluster?

I have a spare cluster so I'll swap out the regulator from that to see if there's any difference too.
