    Aircon Compressor for 84 RRC

    Hi everyone,

I've got an 84 RRC (5sp manual with a 3.9 conversion) and have been told that the aircon compressor is shot.

My mechanic told me to go buy a new one from Coventrys (Sanderson I think?), but I've stumbled across someone wrecking an 86 RRC, and will sell me their compressor for $100.

My question is: did the aircon compressor change from 84 to 86 (I know there were some changes to electrics etc from 85 to 86), including whether the aircon gas type changed?

I've read that with the old gas type (not sure of the name), you need to spend a lot more time and money on the system before you can run it again. Did the 84 RRC's have the old gas type?

Lastly, can anyone recommend a good aircon company in Perth?

    Thank in advance,

    Josh

Pretty sure the 84 would still have the old type gas.

Last time my air con compressor packed in, I got another one from the local wreckers. Most of the older fords had the same type as the Rangie and they only cost $25.00 for a good working compressor.

The old systems don't work so well on new the gas as cant release heat as well and is corrosive and needs mineral oil.
I'll get toasted for this but a new TX valve, Dryer and 500 grams of LPG works very well in old set ups + has lower pressures All my old gear now runs this set up LPG doesn't leak as much either. Not legal for road use though. Not sure why as R 12 was just as unstable as needed more pressure.

Other wise you can get a new compressor for around $36OISH. Then a few extras inc Dryer,Valves etc. May be more if in poor condition.
I wouldn't bother with the 86 compressor unless has a new seal etc.
I'm not sure what year 134a came in but if it still works must have been converted as needs different oil and in some cases seal.
There used to be a FR 12 gas that works ok in R 12 systems. Not sure if its still get-able as I use LPG
My old systems LPG = 2 deg. 134a = 12 deg. and bloody corrosive

With LPG you must have a thermostat or you will have a large ice block and then pressure will build up.

The new gas came in 1993. My 1993 model built in 1992 had R12.

The local guy regassed mine with 134A over a year ago with a new receiver dryer and it works perfectly even at 40C in Kakadu.

Does an 84 have a piston compressor or the later sanden swash plate type?

Piston "Kirby Type" compressors are very cheap now. Seeing you are starting from "scratch" you should be able to put a new compressor on, nesw receiver dryer , with your existing TXetcetc and have a very good system with R134A.

Our old 84 RRC ran a York compressor, I removed it to add into our 88RRC with Isuzu motor as an air compressor. York compressors were in a lot of different vehicles and shouldn't be a big problem to track down

this install is in a TJ Jeep, a lot of guys use the for on board air.

there is also a new air con gas out that is made to work fine in the older style systems, with out the need of upgrading receiver/dryer TX valve, cant think of the name but people that do re-gas should know of it or have it. the radiator guy we use at work told me about it, although he only has 134a gas he was still able to tell me where to go to get the universal gas

going off topic again here guys but its still air con related. does anyone know how well a rotary style air con compressor will work as a air compressor.... compared to the piston style as in the photo below.

Seen in a custom 4x4 magazine that a guy had a 2-door RRC and used the air con compressor(newer style from what i could see in pics) to fill to air suspension tanks of a later model RRC for use as compressed air, and he also had a line to his dizzy to pressurerise it when going through water to keep the inside nice and dry, but he dosnt say if it actulally works or how much pressure he can get into the tanks from this set up, and if it works well enough i will do this also rather than bying a ARB compressor as i have to have the aircon over hauled myself...

    Would it be FR12.....

If so may as well use LPG

toey, why not start a thread to discuss the alternative ways to get On-Board Air.
