Talking RRC Magnet Marelli Alternator rebuild

The alternator in my RRC developed a nice whinning sound over the last few weeks (it sounded like a supercharger oh how i wish......)

The alt was charging fine but i just wanted to catch it before it went pop

I made a few phone calls and managed to source new bearings for $5.23 and $4.86 respectively and the reg/brush pack for just $66! non genuine but quite a good price none the less. I also splashed out and bought a small bearing puller for $32. So the rebuild should come in around $110.

Im pretty pleased with that as i have heard some horror storied about the cost of replacment MM alternators. The com could do with a touch up i think it will be fine for another 100000k or so....

I will post up some pic's and part #'s once i get home

So long as the rear bearing hasn't shreaded the rear housing of the alternator yet you will be OK. Seems to be the death of most from what I've seen.

The rear bearing was okay. It hasn't moved in the housing. The front was bone dry and had traces of dried up grease on the exterior of the alt. The alt's been painted black so i would be surprissed if this is its 2nd (or 3rd......)

but if it is a magnetti marrelli 100 amp, serpentine belt driven, how good are the slip rings?
better to replace it with a new 120 amp bosch jobbie for around $400.

Slip rings as mentioned about are worn but servicable. They have polished up nicely.

Why spend 4 times the repair price to replace a unit that apart from a noisy bearing is perfectly servicable??

If the Rangie alternators are anything like the ones fitted to the Discos then I would throw it as far as possible to replace it with a Bosch which has respectable bearings and better parts availability for traveling.

I was amazed at how STUPID the OEM ones are.

Well to the best of my knowledge the last set of disrespectful bearings lasted 254000k's. If the next set last that they will out last the car.

The alt is producing 13.5 volts at idle under 22amp of load. At full load (77amp) it still producing 12.7 volts. So i'm happy.

I agree. 258,000k's original fit in mine and it only **** the brushes and the rear mount leg was broken, and that had done 100,000k's like that.
The only reason I replaced rather than repair is I have a lot higher power needs now and the OEM 85amp was running at full tilt constantly.

    Cheers

    Andrew
