did you get the firing order right?
where and how did you test the spark.
if you took it straight from the coil HT lead before test one of the plug leads. if you dont get spark there then youve lost the rotor button. or the rotor heads not turning.
My 1981 2 door RR has been a reliable goer, until now. I changed the plugs, cap and rotor 'cos the old ones looked a little worse for wear.
I know, if it ain't broke don't fix it, but it was such a nice Saturday arvo.....and gardening duties were being suggested. See where I am going with this...
Anyway now it will not start at all. I have now flattened the main and aux batteries.
Before I did, however, I checked for spark. OK there on the plugs. Can' tell if it was strong but it looked fat and blue.
Fuel pump ok, delivering gushes to the Strombergs.. Then put all old components back. Still no start.
Then noticed the Y piece from the rocker breather to the 2 carbies was cracked. Small wiggle and it snapped in three.
Q1. If I have spark and fuel what else stops a rangie V8?
Q2. Can I leave the above tubes free to the atmosphere or can the lack of pressure to the carbs prevent starting?
I uses to brag that my engine was so simple I could fix it with gaffer tape and wire. Not anymore. I have a feeling the Prince may have something to do with this.
Don't really want to call the NRMA but the handbrake is insistant as the RR is crippled in her parking spot.

Firing order as per Haynes and several net sites.
Spark at plug, but some plugs very black. Could be a symptom of weak spark. My voltmeter does not go that high... Might get a new coil and condenser tomorrow.
firing order may be right but is it in sync?
its pretty easy to get 1 post out and pooch the game.

The order might be right ... But did you mark & identify the position of spark lead number 1 on your Dizzy, before you ripped the cap and leads off???
If the answer is no ... then your gonna have to start from the beginning and set it up from TDC with piston number 1 in the firing position (& not 180 degrees out)
Other than that .... put the old rotor back in ....

No didn't mark the lead from no 1. Big error.
However the Haynes manual has the lead plan for the cap BUT my user manual (original) has the lead plan in a different place.
Q: Can anyone with a Rangie have a look and see what cylinders are connected either side of the distribuor cap clip that is towards the front of the vehicle. The Haynes has 1 and 8 either side while my RR owners manual has 4 and 8 either side.

Your reading the book literary ... not Laterally
You have to set it all up by putting the Crank onto TDC
You just can't put it on TDC and be in the right spot for piston *1 ... as there are 2 cycles for that motor .. Compression stroke & exhaust stroke
So we have to find TDC, the compression stroke ... Then we can setup your dizzy cap & leads
1: Take off the cap & remove all leads from the cap & spark plugs
2: Pull all the spark plugs out
3: Standing at the front of the car .. Piston 1 is at the FRONT RHS of the motor
3: Grab a socket and fit it to the crank bolt
4: The motor turns in a CLOCKWISE direction
5: Put your thumb on & cover *1 spark plug hole
6: Turn the crank towards TDC // and you are gonna feel compression blow past your thumb ... Keep turning CLOCKWISE untill you feel the compression
7: When you felt the compression ... Move the crank (clockwise) towards TDC
8: Take note of where the Rotor on the dizzy is pointing .... This is the position of Lead *1
9: With a felt pen ... mark the centre of the rotor onto the external side of the dizzy
10: Put the cap back on the dizzy and note the mark on the dizzy to the side of the cap
11: This mark will line up to a Spark lead pole of the dizzy cap
12: This pole is for piston number 1
13: Install all the spark plugs
14: Install Spark lead number 1 from the cap to the spark plug
15: In a ANTICLOCKWISE direction ... Install the remainder of the leads ... 1 2 7 5 6 3 4 8 .. 1 at a time
16: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE REMOVED THE SOCKET SET FROM THE CRANK BOLT
17: Remove all tools and rags from engine bay
18: Ensure a final safety inspection is done over the whole car
19: Start the motor

Success!!
2 problems.
1. I had the order correct but one position out of phase. Moved 1 to the correct position and then all the others, determined by following Mike RR90 previous post.
Ther correct position is not where either of my manuals has it. I can only assume the dizzy has been replaced at one stage and refitted incorrectly.
2. I bought some new plugs from Ebay, supposidly for a RR V8 engine. They are however about 3 to 4 mm shorter than the old plugs. Old plugs are a goer. Anyone know if shorter plugs would totally prevent starting.
Anyway, put all the old stuff back and she fired first go.
Should not have angered the Prince.....
