I would change the fuel filter first and see if that fixes it.

If not then take out the pump assembly and see if the filter sock is clogged or has split, and the pump inlet has been blocked. Failing all that get a new VR Commodore pump.

BUT I think its probably a blocked fuel filter, and before you ask it is in the RH rear wheel arch, on the chassis towards the front of the arch.

Your old alternator will have blown a diode (1 of the 6 main diodes), don't know if its easily fixable, ask a sparky. It will have prevented the tacho output working and would reduce the alternator maximum output current by about 1/2. Very common fault with alternators.

    Thanks again,

I'm thinking my car's a bit different... 1987/8 with carbies.

Fuel filter located LH side under bonnet below alternator. I took it out an ran the car, didn't seem to make a big difference. (I've ordered a new element will test properly when that arrives.)

Does this mean my fuel pump, and strainer are in the tank? There's no access from the cabin so it's a remove the tank job?

Fuel pump is located underneath on the passenger side about half way along the cars length, literally under the rear seats footwell. The pump should be a Facet solenoid jobby. The ends of the pump undo to service the strainer.

I wondered where a 2 door came from. Must have been a European spec or British "Commercial" to have carbies.
Yes the Facet has a filter in the end and it should pump as long as it ticks. Sometimes people replace the Facet with some Japanese pump and they do not have enough capacity, so you should check that it has a Facet still, and if not refit one.

Thanks Guys, I'm not finding the fuel pump, no matter how long I stare under the car. maybe I need glasses.

    more history,

I'm lead to believe the car was one of 3 2 doors bought into AU in 1987 all sold in Sydney in 1988 ( I suspect no one wanted them)

I think my one has a dealer fitted 88 dash and steering column / wheel.

The carbies were originally SU (I still have them off car) been replaced with the normal type (forgot the name)

After reading something about the RR history I get the idea for some reason that this car was Saudi spec.

Well my 81 had a facet which AFAIR was on the LH side of the car on the LH chassis rail just in front of teh LH rear wheel. You should hear it go Ticka ticka tick every time you start up!!!

Now Rover may have changed to an in tank unit, but really you are a bit on your own as all OZ spec cars were injection by that time.

Have a look at the LH side of the tank and see if there is a round entry for the fuel pickup, then follow the lines to the pump.

If there is no round fitting then the tank is an injection type one with the gauge and maybe internal fuel pump on the top of the tank. Have a look in the floor of the "boot" and see if there is a porthole there, although some early injected cars did not have the hole , so you have to drop the tank to see.
    Happy hunting!!!!!

    G`day Paul

For the fuel pump it`s likely in the tank and in the top .

On the side of the tank , if you feel/look up the top part of the left side of the fuel tank and you find wires connected you have found your sender unit . EFI has the sender and pumps as a unit but also in the top of the tank .
Carby pump held by screws , efi pump held by locking ring .

With the carbys i guess there was good reason to change them to the CD type but the hif,SU engines had a higher horse rating than CD .

I`d suggest you check the diaphrams (spell) for holes and the oil level or existance of in the pots .

Carby cars will sometimes run as you describe when only one carby is working to spec , as in run fine down lower but run out of breath higher up or prolonged .

Also Carb wagons and commercial had pretty much the same mechs and i think carbs were around till about 1990 or 3.5 end in general production , pretty sure 3.5 cross bolt was an option of millitary .

    Cheers
    Peter

Its not as hard as it looks to remove the in tank pump really, just undo fill hoses and bolts, lower tank gently on the left side with a trolley jack. Your towbar may prevent full lowering. I imagine there is an EFI style pump inside, a low pressure lift pump. These were fitted to 240/260 Volvo's, some police VN Commodores and dual tank Nissan Patrols. My brother made a hatch in his '87 rear floor, you need a bigger section of ally ripple floor out of a donor Rangie and screw it over the hole with sealant etc....
