I have laptop charger that I bought from Jaycar for $49.95. It has all the voltages that most laptops run on and comes with various common connectors. It plugs into the lighter and works well.

    Two options

    1. get a 12VDC-240VAC inverter and plug your standard laptop power supply in to that. Some say you need a pure sine wave inverter but mine runs fine off a cheap $80 300Watt modified sine wave from SuperCheap.
    2. get a proper 12V DC-DC converter specially made to run your laptop off 12V. This "up converts" the 12V DC to whatever your laptops takes.

You can't normally just plug your laptop straight in to the 12V DC. ( they seem to need 15-19V or thereabouts )

Direct DC-DC conversion would be more efficient than 12VDC-240VAC then back down to DC. ( therefore more life out of your battery). 240V inverters normally also run a fan which can be a bit noisy.
Acer may have a 12V car/airplane power supply ( check their website ) or you can get third party ones. Just make sure it supplies enough amps/watts to run your laptop. You can get an idea by looking on your AC power supply and see what wattage or amps output it is.

I bought a Kensington adapter a while back, about $100, but it does everything.

12v or 240v, comes with points for phones, ipods, all kinds of laptops, usb, etc.

    And tiny.

Have a look at this thread -

As someone else said, if you buy a 12v DC adapter make sure that it can provide enough amps. For example, the Jaycar one mentioned supplies 2.9 amps but my laptop requires 4.6 amps. Projecta http://www.projecta.com.au/catalogue...4/asset_id/138make two models - 3.5 amps and 6 amps.

What about a cheap inverter like this one?

It might be useful for charging other things too like your camera etc? It might be worth checking that any stuff you want to use charges on a modified sine wave output.
