    new to the forum

hi, only new to the forum but not LR. I currently have a Disco4 with a few accessories. get off road as much as possible. did the cape this year and came back thru Dixie station over the Mitchell river and home thru the middle. Broke the front left cv north of Weipa on Pennyfather beach and was very happy with Landrover getting us going again. overall i'm very happy with my 4.

    Welcome aboard.

Can you describe what led to the breakage of the CV ?

I thought with the advanced traction control that might have been hard to do.

Can't wait to get to the cape myself....but a couple of years away.

In addition to Brett's comment, how did LR get you going again in that remote place? Did you get towed back to Weipa or did the Disco get you out, and if so how did it work with no drive to one wheel?

I'm sure we're all very interested in the details.

    new to the forum

    Hi Brett and Bob,
we were headed out onto Pennyfather beach about 70klms north of Weipa. there were 4 4wd in our group. Big John in a hilux run down the beach and got bogged in the sand. I was following him in the d4 with a conqueror490 full of everything. I unhitched in the dunes and went down snatched them out. no worries. then the 100series with a camper trailer of Johnnys got stuck on the track. my wife snatched him out all in on go camper and all. hitched to the conqueror again and struggled to come up a bit of a climb to where we wanted to camp. so, back into reverse and the camper didn't want to move. I gave it a heap in reverse and bang, the front left cv let go. it wasn't til after that I realised i'd left the handbrake on on the camper. as you know you can't go anywhere if you break a cv. on the sat phone firstly to RACQ who were coming in after the weekend to get us. called Landrover on the breakdown line and they said they'd come but RACQ were already organised. they couldn't believe that i'd broken a cv as they said they just don't break. on Monday morning when the tow truck turned up they had a 76series work truck on the back. they did a uturn at the start of the track and bogged the tow truck. it took them 3 hrs to get the tow truck out. they used the 76series to tow out our camper which we had drained all the water and took extra stuff out and put into the other vehicles. when the 76series came to tow out the d4 it couldn't move. they tried as best as they could. in the end I used it as an anchor and winched myself to them and then repeated this all the way thru the dunes approx. 300m. once back in Weipa, landrover offered to send another replacement 4wd from cairns and wanted to send our d4 back to cairns for repair and then send it back to us. they hired us a cruiser in Weipa but we weren't allowd to go more than 100klms from Weipa. they offered to pay our accommodation in Weipa but that was covered by RACQ. the local RACQ workshop after several calls were allowed to do the repair and LR flew up a new cv from Melbourne. I wasn't out of pocket one cent. they, LR were brilliant. sorry a bit long winded but they was a lot going on. apart from that the D4 was excellent. LR are still amazed that the cv broke.

    Hi Brett,
looking at a set of Cooper Zeons in the 275/55/20 for my alloys. do they ride well? I have a set of steel rims made for a bit of fun in the mud but I have the 20's on most of the time. thanks Ian

Rock crawl has been reported to provide at least some mobility when a CV is busted but probably too slow for dune climbing and only rear wheel drive to boot.

Is a busted CV a reason to have a front locker?

My 18's ride fine. Normal driving no different to my factory 19's. But if I get a bit more excited on the road, they don't handle quite as well.....but not by much. But then I have gone down from 19's and not up like your plans.
Really don't know what the 20's would be like, but I guess better handling on the road than my 18's.

    Ian (Bowie),

Looks like the service you got was exceptional....but you might have been unlucky with the CV going bang.

    Welcome to the forum

Its good to read a positive story about L/R for a change, lets hope they continue to provide this sort of backup.

    Cheers Ean
