    D3 Alarm Issue

    Hi All,

This is my first post on the forum. I have a 2008 Discovery 3 SE (Petrol) which I have had for 3 months.

I have an issue with the alarm going off randomly. It would occasionally go off in the middle of the night or other random times.

I have read all the information on this forum regarding the issue but as the cars is still under warranty (statutory) I took it back to Land Rover to get it sorted.

LR said that it was the bonnet switch and did some adjustments (they didn't replace the switch). The alarm continued to go off randomly after this so I shorted out the bonnet switch wires just before the switch with one of those white clamp on wire connectors that cuts through the insulation (not sure what they are called). The alarm was OK for a couple of weeks but now it has started going off again on a daily basis.

So back to Land Rover again today and they tell me that it is definitely the bonnet switch. They have replaced the switch and removed the short I put in the wires. I tried to argue with them but it was futile.

So my questions is, does their diagnostic tool conclusively tell them which sensor is setting off the alarm? Is it definitely the bonnet switch or are they just guessing?

If it is the bonnet switch then why did it keep going off after I shorted out the wires? Two possibilities are that there is a bad connections somewhere else in the wires between the switch and the computer or my method of shorting the wires was unreliable.

    Any thoughts?

Also would a Faultmate FCR diagnostic tool give me information about what sets the alarm off. My experience so far with the Discovery suggests that I will need to buy a diagnostic tool of some kind anyway.

    Phil

The diagnostics will tell them which switch triggered the alarm.

My 2007 D3 had a similar issue. Quick search of the forums said most commonly the bonnet sensor. I disconnected mine then no trouble for over a month. Now to order a new one to replace the faulty one.
