Centre Console & Dash Off & Not Starting

Disappointed to experience my first problem with the D4. An electrical fault while out offroading.

Started with the centre console and parts of dash console turning off without any messages at all but still driving without problem. Pulled to side of track and plugged in iiDTool. Reading a voltage of 13.7V and a few communication faults, mostly related to BCM communication loss.

Decided to turn it off and restart. Threw lots of error messages while turning off and then couldn't get it to start Scary when in the bush, alone.

Tried multiple times to start with key fob up against steering column and following the user manual instructions, to no avail. Then on another attempt it starts and I'm not sure exactly what I did differently but very happy.

Start driving out and the centre console starts to turn on like normal, all looks good. But then centre console turns off, just like before. We drive all the way back to our holiday accommodation without further changes. Same issues when turning off again, throwing lots of error messages and won't restart. Again after a few attempts it does restart (not sure how) but now the whole dash is off including the taco!

The restart attempts produce a "smart key not found error" but I'm pretty sure it's not the key battery. Tried both keys. And the centre console & dash being off seems to be a symptom of the real issue.

It seems to be a loss of power somewhere to one or more ECUs. Could it be a connector loosened on the rough track? I wondered about faulty battery too but when it did start, it cranked easily just like normal.

Anyway, I have been on to LandRover Assist and the guy was excellent. Will get someone to look at it in the morning to confirm that it's immobile officially, then I expect it to be tilt-truck to nearest dealer (Warwick) or hopefully home (Brisbane) if they are kind to me I hope they don't try to blame DBS or Llams. Seems totally unrelated and both have been fitted for quite some time.

Anyway, I'll update when I know more. Let me know if anyone has experienced something similar.

    Regards,
    Scott

First thing I would do is swap the battery with your other battery.

Never trust your battery, it could be a broken plate which only misbehaves sometimes.

A loose earth stud nut somewhere would be my guess. There are some at the base of each A-pillar.

    Scott,
Sounds very similar to an issue I experienced, dash & centre console shut down, no a/c, no windows and when trying to start had the cannot find key fob message; but the car still drove as normal, even with the restricted limp mode message. Some hard resets and multiple attempts with the key fob in the emergency spot and I would get it going, but without any instruments etc...

Do you have the rear a/c fitted?
Mine turned out to be the Canbus wire being shorted to earth (intermittently) due to the rear a/c (fitted in behind the passenger side luggage compartment panel) squashing the wiring loom on to the chassis where it runs under the rear a/c. Taped up Canbus wire, lifted and remounted a/c unit and all good.
So, I would guess at a Comms wire short to earth or as Graeme said a loose earth point.
In my case the dealer had it for two weeks of it's first three weeks and as required were following LRA's diagnose and report, test, diagnose and report method and could not find anything, until the dealer tech took matters into his own hands and separated the Comms front half and back half, then physically traced the looms when he realised it was something in the back half. A bit of luck too I suppose, but I was certainly thankful he thought outside the square that they are placed in. LRA gave me three years 100K free scheduled services as goodwill.
    Best of luck!
    Cheers, Mungus.

Thanks for the info and yes I do have rear a/c. So the Canbus short or earth stud loose are both excellent leads. Will know more later today I hope.

    Thanks again,

Hi folks, there is more to come in this thread and I will leave it to the OP to post up more info but from customer feedback and some great info supplied by DiscoZack on the Disco3, UK site, here is some related update info.

I am still trying to find out if this is the total fix or just one of possibly two different updates needed.

Anyway, here is the LR UPDATE specs for the GATEWAY Module.

    TSB Number: LTB-00667-NAS-1
    NHTSA Number: 10056435
    TSB Date: August 1, 2014
Date Added to File: December 2, 2014
    Failing Component: Electrical System: Software
    Summary:
Land rover: due to gateway module (gwm) software issue, the instrument cluster and/or eco stop/start, fails to function and displays, intermittently, Battery warning message and warning lamp. Model 2014 lr4 (la).

    Resolved !

I am happy to report that the issue is fixed It is remarkably similar to the issue Mungus suffered, a medium-speed canbus wire damaged and then shorting but a different location. In my case, the canbus wire is in a small loom that runs in front of the battery. It got abraded and cut, exposed the copper and then it shorted to chassis. The dealer technician who found the problem has re-routed this loom by attaching to the plastic edge of the cranking battery mounting tray.

I learnt a couple of things from the dealer tech regarding the canbus that I'll share here. People may know this already but it was new knowledge to me.

The medium-speed canbus deals with "non-essential" things and this is why centre console, a/c, windows, etc went off. The instrument pack is on medium-speed which means when it's out, the car is drivable but it takes out your speedo, fuel gauge, etc, which is not really the safest situation.

The key transponder in the steering column is actually on the high-speed canbus. In theory this is good, car should be able to start with a medium-speed fault BUT it seems that something to do with the key is on the medium speed because starting was problematic for me (key not recognised etc). So if you get this type of fault, don't turn off the car. Go as far as you can towards help or somewhere that you're ok to be stuck looking for the fault.

The tech suggested that putting the hazards on would have helped to "wake up" things for starting. I don't quite understand this part of it and I'm not going to try and replicate to prove/disprove that theory But could be worth trying if having key recognition problems.

The car reacts quite sensitively to a medium-speed canbus fault compared to other manufacturers apparently ... he's previously worked for other premium makes. In other vehicles you'd get a fault message but not the major drama associated with starting that I got.

Having said that, the D4 is generally very reliable, with issues either from factory (connector not plugged in fully), loose earth (as per Graeme's suggestion) or accessory fitting (usually teck screw through something). These are all in the minority.

Regarding the dealer, I have nothing but praise for how this has been handled, how the troubleshooting was approached and their view on the warranty status, ie not blaming accessories without foundation. It is good to know that they employ at least some high quality experienced people.

The Land Rover Assist experience was very good as well, given that the car needed to be put on tilt truck and I was away from home (hire car provided). But I'm obviously glad it wasn't a properly remote location and I did manage to get the random start that got me out of the bush.

The RACQ guy sub-contracted for roadside assist did not know how to get the car into neutral for winching on to truck, so I was glad to have learnt this myself thanks to this forum and Disco3. However, he did know about hard reset and did check fuses.

I hope this long, rambling post is useful to others.

    Regards,
    Scott

On an unrelated thing i was chatting to a bloke last night at work who said his wife has a D2 the last model before they changed to D3 any way she went to a big hospital to see her sick father got a park quite close to the hospital anyway came back out and the car alarm was going off it brain and the car wouldn't start and was playing up hell bound!! Called RACQ he couldn't sort it put it on the tow truck anyway about 5 minutes down the road he stopped and said let me check something and got in the car and it started perfectly the alarm had stopped and not an issue at all!! Apparently its something to do with the hospitals electronics or something as the RACQ fella had heard of it before has anyone else??
