New choice in 18" D3 road biased tyres available

If you want a road based tyre for the D3 SE then your options have just grown. Thought I'd share this, so anybody changing for a road biased tyre doesn't get those awful Goodyears again!

I really didn't get on with the standard fitment 18" Goodyear Wranglers, as I found that they wander badly (tramline) and start to get noisier with age. Unfortunately, it's taken 43K to wear the things out though.

I was originally thinking of getting the General AT2 all terrains, as I've heard good things about them. But to be honest my D3 only sees road use as we have the 110 County for off-roading which is kitted out with muddies, etc.

Anyway, as it happens it was a good job I held back on changing them... as Continental have just released the Cross Contact UHP in a 255/60 R18 112V, which is exactly the same size & load rating as the Goodyears fitted as standard to Disco 3 SE's. They're so new that the Continental web site doesn't even list them yet, just the 55 profile which I believe is fitted to the RR Sport.

They are much quieter than the Goodyears, and the tram-lining I used to get when driving up a worn road (say the Great Northern where the tarmac has 2 ruts in it from the Road Trains pounding up and down) has totally gone away.

It's like a different car now I've got those Goodyears off!

    Piccies:

    Oh yeah....

I forgot to mention that during my research into new tyres, one guy at a tyre place recommended a Kumho 255/60 R18.

They do make such a thing, it's a KH15 OE, but it's a passenger car tyre and the load rating is only 108 - not sure if this is high enough for the heavyweight D3.

    Link anyway:

I didn't spend too long ringing around, but the best price I obtained was $395 each, fitted, all up.

They're cheaper than the Goodyears as well !

That's about what I was quoted for the Wranglers, you've not been ripped off.

    Jon,

How are you finding the Conti's now you have had them on for a bit ? I am thinking of doing them also. I put Conti SportsContact2 on my 3-series BMW earlier this year and don't mind them.

    Pirelli Scorpions

22,000 kms ago I fitted Pirelli Scorpions to my HSE LR Disco, great for the first 22,000 but now I thought I had bearing noise, (now getting very loud), but I was advised by LR service it was the tyres. They are as noisy as the Goodyear Wranglers, a terrible tyre as fitted new to most Discoverys from new. I had to change tyres at 30,000, they wore scollops in the tread. Both tyres were 255/60 R18s.

Did you not like the Conti Cross Contact AT, available in the same size?
