Discovery 1 300Tdi mufflers - Wheres the sound!

    good day,

I'm after getting a good note to come out of my disco 1 300tdi muffler. I have taken out the main orig muffler and replaced it with a stright through but with silencers. Will i get a nice note if i take off the rear muffler? Dont want nothing too LOUD but just to sound alright. have heared that the orig rear mufflers on the Tdi's are straight through anyways so would they have silencers in them?

    thanks guys

gotta go loud to get any kind of decent noise from the diesels.

i reckon Zuno's camo disco is the best sounding i've heard, but yeh not sure how much the neighbours would like it

yeahhhh that's just a bit too loud for my likeing lol most likely he is running a straight through system with no silencers lol. Another member on here now gone had the same gurrgiling noise from his truck like zunos.

when i get around to it i'm gonna make one that's 3" off the turbo, to probably the rear diff or there abouts. then down to 2.5" over the diff and single straight muffler.

reason being...no reason really, just have left over 3" straight pipe and mufflers from old projects

A quick peruse of the Bosch Automotive Handbook and you'll see that no matter what exhaust, a four cylinder, four stroke diesel will always sound like, to quote rick130, "".

Straight six or V8 will give a better note.

This toyo six sounds pretty good even without exhaust.

Unfortunately it's a four cylinder diesel, it will always sound like crap.

I built a 3" system sans any silencers at all under a 130.
Don't let anyone tell you that a turbo muffles the exhaust sound.
    They lie.

Painful was the only word for it, with a shocking harmonic right at 100km/h
(admittedly in a Defender, it may be at a different speed in a Disco)

I kid you not, SWMBO could hear me about 8km away as I dropped over the range on my way home, and it wasn't a nice sound either (I spent a lot of my early adult life around race tracks, in the pits and garages as well as on the track, i've heard some nice engines )

After a resonator and a small muffler added the harmonic is nearly eliminated, and the weight of the heavy wall muffler appears to have acted as a mass damper by reducing some engine harshness.
The problem is it's still too loud and still sounds like crap, but at least everyone can hear me heel and toeing down the gears when coming up to a corner
