Unhappy WTF is this noise on my 300Tdi!!!?? (video clip)

So, I replaced the tension pulley bearing, as I thought that it was the source of the dreadful sqeaking and sqeauling that has developed over the last week or so.

Listening with a bushmans stethoscope (read: screwdriver) I traced the noise back to the tension pulley area.
How silly of me to think I had the problem solved and sorted

Check the video clip out for what I mean ...

It's hard to identify the noise on this computer because the speakers are crap but have you tried putting some talcum powder on the drive belts??

That will/should stop the squeak but what is that thump I can hear??? I don't know, sorry!

Sounds like the belt to me from my experience.

Those belts do have a directional way they go on try taking it off and putting it on the other way. Also has worked for me in the past put a little WD40 on the belt see what happens.

Also cleaning the the crap out of the groves in the pulleys can help, as the smallest piece of crap can cause this.

99% stuffed bearing in an idler pulley IMHO. Belt off, spin pulleys by hand.

Or misaligned pulley on the tensioner? There's a hint of plastic in the noise...

On the drivers side is the tensioner pulley, Did you replace the whole unit or just the bearing? In the vid you can see the tensioner bouncing about.
We tend to find if you just replaced the bearing's, the tensioner itself is knaft & needs to be replaced.
Remove belt & clean all grooves in pulleys. Also check all pulleys by rotating & have a good listen. May even be A/C pulley &/or Alternator pulleys worn.
    Good luck.

I have the same noise issue, even replaced my tensioner pully bearings but no difference, it diddnt occur to me that the belt may be directional, I put the old belt back on because I couldnt be bothered with it.

I will try the new belt both ways and let you know if it fixes the problem. cheers.

ps: ..just an observation, in the video clip(unsure as to whether it is related or not) the noise seems to synchronize with the yellow section of the belt(if this makes sense).

    THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!

I took your advice, took the belt off, cleaned up each of the ribbed pulleys and turned the belt around ...

    VOILA!!!

No more squeaks or squeals, which is such a relief and the feeling of NOT hearing the squeaks or squeals is indescribable!

Thanks again guys, for all your help

Turns out you were also right!

I got that dreaded squeak back only a few days ago, and this morning, it was at its most obnoxious!

I opened the bonnet, to investigate yet again. I once again pulled off the belt, cleaned up the pulleys best I could, reset everything, that damn noise was still there!

I toyed around with the revs, to try and get a better feel for the location of the noise, I gave it one quick squirt of the throttle, and the alternator belt all but threw itself off the pulleys!

Made a quick call to Dwayne at M.R, done the dash down there to pick up a nice new shiny tensioner, got straight back home swapped them over and she no make no noises no more!
You'd think I'd have taken it off at the start of all this to sus it out wouldn't ya!?

Take a look at the pics, im sure most of you will have seen this all before, but hopefully it'll help others out who mightn't.

This is what a "KNAFT" (lol sniegy) tensioner looks like ...

I'd replace the bearing in the old tensioner and keep it as a reserve...Ive done that with my old one...just remember to pack the new bearing with good grease as they always come with a minimum...

    Have a wee peep here...

Thanks for all the content re belt squeals. Popped off the tensioner assembly this morning. Checked it out - looked fine. Took out a 5 cent coin and happened to notice the image of the Queen on it - indeed a worthy replacement in the absence of a true british penny (Thank you Your Majesty). Place the 5c at 9 o'clock, tightened and replaced belt. Fired her up and Tally Ho - no squeal!

Just curious, is this a temporary fix? Should I replace the tensioner? Or should Her Majesty happily remain in position ensuring quiet and sound engine rule?
