    Question wheel bearings

I have recently purchased a land rover discovery 1997 model and suspect that i may need to replace the rear right hand side wheel bearings as the wheel has a bit of movement and the Tyre is wearing on the inside. was wondering if this is the wheel bearing or could it be some thing else? Also where is the best place to get the parts needed to fix this problem? Any information on this problem would be greatly appreciated cheers.

most likely the wheel bearing but it could be the swivel pins.

jack up the wheel, have someone stand on the brakes and wobble it again. if it doesnt change the motion then its the swivel pins, if it does its the wheel.

Its the REAR wheel bearing guys -- How can it be swivel pins or wheel alignment .

BUT the tyre was probably on the front when it got worn, even so the only wheel alignment adjustment of the front is toe in -out and that won't make it scrub unless its almost undrivable.

A basic check of wheel bearings (and front swivel pins) is grab the top of each wheel & push it in & out with all your force, any movement is bad.

You can buy the Bearings & Seals anywhere, Local Beraing shop should have them, Repco / Autobarn etc will order them in for you, or save money & order them online !!

my bad, answering emails and AULRO at the same time....

someone is going to be wondering how the hell just grabbing the rim at 12+6 then giving it a rock is going to identify swivel pin slop and why I want them to check the fronts at the same time......

    I'll go again.

    Yep...

Most likely it will be the wheel bearings.....

Check the fronts too while you're at it. (just jack it up and do the rim rock check if theres no motion and no grinding when you turn the wheel you're good) IME they usually all start to let go at about the same time and the fronts go before the rears as the fronts have the rubber cap where as the rears are a solid piece.

Since you need to pull the rear axle to check/adjust/replace the wheel bearings its a very good idea to inspect the splines and the axle for signs of damage.

While the wheels off whip out the pad and inspect them and the back of the rotor for oil contamination then check the rotor thickness.

    try ebay,
tip RRC, Defender, Disco 1 all use the same bearings, front and rear, inner and outer. theres a few variations of hub seal but they all fit each other.
just make are the bearings are genuine timkin and you can't go wrong

As Dave has suggested, doing all 4 wheels at the same time is a pretty good idea in my experience.

The back ones went first in my Disco1, so I changed them, but straight after that the front ones died too. Maybe only 1,000kms between. When the front ones died while driving they jammed and I ended up having to replace the front hub on one side. I guessing I could have avoided that if I replaced all 4 when the first one died.

If they are the same as an RRC, as suggested by others, then just go to your local bearing shop and get Timken LM603049. Should be about $30 each. They are heaps cheaper from overseas, but then you have freight on top of that. If you don't mind waiting you might save a bit by ordering from someone like Paddocks. Your bearing shop should be able to get you the seals as well.
