    transfercase interchangeable?

Hey guys, just a quick question:

Is the transferase on a D1 interchangeable between manual and automatic gearboxes? both the same year.

    Thanks

Yes, even interchangeable with D2 except the models that did not have a diff lock, 2001-2 mostly.

As far as I know there are some other differences.

The D2 has a range selector switch in it so the ECU knows which throttle position map to use. This matters if a D1 box is going in to a D2.

The D2 I don't think has a speedo output on it as required on the D1. D2 picked up speed from the SLABS computer. This matters if a D2 box is going into a D1.

There is a different front flange between the D1 and D2 transfer cases but they can be swapped over.

Out of interest, the D2 has a different cut of teeth which is meant to be quieter and some if you're going to abuse it, they are also apparently not as strong.
    Cheers

The good thing about this forum, eventually someone will come along and correct the errors of others.

    Thanks Slunnie.

Have just recently put the transfercase from my spare 95 model V8 R380 into my 97 TDI auto with no glitches.
