    Stepper switch

Morning people, im having a hard time getting my D1 v8 started when cold or warm, sometimes it sarts after it winding over for a bit.
The following have beeen replaced, fuel pump, leads , plugs, rotor and cap, ignition amp, fuel filter, think coil is good.

Im thinking maybe there is a problem with the stepper switch, i believe yo can bridge it out, what wires do you do this to out of the 4 in the plug?

Try sealing it off first, or remove it and seal the openings - that will tell you whether or not hard starting is air ( ie too much ) related. Also look at vacuum ports.

Usually the stepper only requires a clean of the cone and port - although there have been threads describing weird stuff owners have found about it.

I have removed the fuel filter to find it full of crud, knocked it all out and out back on as never had another, cranked over to no avail, pressure on guage for fuel rail was 35psi whilst cranking, this seems normal and not a fuel problem? tried taking out stepper and block off, still no change.

Can't see how the stepper would prevent starting, if you pressed down on the accelerator a bit. If it then starts but stalls as soon as you lift your foot, then sure, clean the stepper. You can also raise the base idle, 3/16 allen key in top of throttle area.

I think it maybe time to let the disco go, i have no idea on why i won't start when it feels like it, i need something more reliable for work as with out the car i cant get there, so i costs me time off.

This fault just appeared over night, i have had nothing but trouble since december with it.

Anybody interested in it PM me.

    Cheers Paul

So where did you go & what happened in December??

but .... have you measured the volts that are at the Coil ... Is it 12Volts??

Also .... have you looked at what colour the spark is at the spark plug
Take number 2 out and have a look at the colour .... as it winds over, is it a Nice Blue or a Dull orange ... Best done in the dark

Also .... Try this little test .... Turn the key to ON and then wind the motor over for a split second / STOP & turn off the key / Then restart it again .... Does it start??

Hi Mike, took a trip up the mid north coast for the holidays, whilst up there my header tank and water pump went, then the week after i got back she would die under load after warming up.

Its been running fine for 2 weeks untill last thursday when it just would not start one morning togo to work, it starts when it feels like it.....

I tried plug no 2, nice big blue spark.

Still no start, tried the key for a split second and turned off, and the bugger started straight away! what is that indicating?

This is the method that I use on a cold start every morning to get mine to fire up ... and it fires straight up every morning on the second shot

I believe that the first quick start of the motor is putting some fuel in the pot & is left in there to vaporise (Gassing) in the pot .... and when you have the second shot of starting ... The gassed petrol is helping the motor fire-up quickly .....

OR ..... the other thought I have is, that it is a way to fix any priming issues that my fuel system has

However tho .. When my motor is warmed ... I never have to prime it, and it always fires straight up

Well hopefully one of the "Brains trust" will give their opinion on whats going on

But in the meantime, my 2c of a guess would be.....

You have a crappy fuel system .... with your comment about a fuel filter "full of crud" and then putting it back on
+ when you go to some older servos ... there's always the chance of buying some dirty fuel ....Do a search on MattewK, in this D1 section, as he has just been through this exact problem

You can buy those fuel filters at Repco / coventrys / where-ever .... go buy a new fuel filter and a dose of injector cleaner .....

    Change the fuel filter
Run the fuel tank down to 15 litres
Undo the drain bung of the fuel tank and drain the remainder of fuel out
Check for the condition of the fuel that came out
IF it has ANY crud in the fuel .... Install ANOTHER new fuel filter
Run half a tank of fuel with injector cleaner in it & burn it up on a 100kph highway drive ... Do this drive in 1 day

Also .... if you want to fire it up and it won't happen on petrol ...
(Last resort method only - can be very dangerous - Don't do it, if you don't know why it works or how it works)
a bit of Circuit board cleaner spray up the vacuum hose "inlet" of the plentium, will soon see some cooperation .....

BTW .... Does your vacuum advance on the dizzy hold vacuum???? (is working?)
