D2 Cheap Headlining D.I.Y. Fix. caution lots of pics

my headlining fell down and as i am 6'3" tall i sit very high in the car, and the fabric was resting on my head while i drive. wifey was ok, cos she is a mere 5'10". its been gradually getting worse, so i devised a plan. it changed part way through i think for the better. total cost if i didnt already have the stuff $65 plus about 3 - 4 hours.

i took the hoodlining out, not too hard, just a few fidly clips and screws etc. be careful taking it out as it is flexible but creases easily. 2 people recommended. heres mine out on the ground after i swept off all the old foam backing from the fabric lining.

here's the fabric that i was going to reglue on using contact, after a hose down.

hoodlining backing after a good scrub with soapy water and a pressure hose down. careful not too much pressure or water as it is foam filled and will soak up the water.

then i had a brainwave, had some stuff laying around from patching up the caravan. this can easily be bought from supercheap or the likes. about $30 for the stone guard and about $35 for the gun to use it. i had both already. i could have painted over a more tan colour if i wanted to be pedantic, but i think it doesn't look out of place in the offwhite. has a nice textured finish, only time will tell if it traps dirt, but it wasnt expensive so...(priced reskin $275 plus removel/fitting $200, so saved myself $400 odd)

Hoodlining after a few coats of stone guard. note the A pillar side trim at bottom left for colour difference. looks a lot better in the car.

and back in after cursing and so on, need at least 2 people to hold the lining up into place while fixing it back.

Great stuff, looks awesome. Which I came up with this idea before I paid $300 to get a new one put in.

Great idea. Have you noticed any acoustical differences, drumming sounds etc? Just thinking about the lack of the initial foam and headlining material which must have played some part if noise was prone to occur.

    Cheers

if noise is a problem, it might be possible to spray some bitumen like sound deadener on the underside of the roof and head liner

soo, the headliner is a foam sandwiched between 2 sheets of fibreglass. i have then put a coating of stone guard flex paint. i dont think there will be any noise issues.

Scouse and I had ours done for $110 each (including sunroof panel) here in Sydney. We removed/refitted them.
