help with choosing the right disco2

    Dear all the members
I m new here, have only few knowladge about disco. I m looking for a discovery 2 V8 or TD5. seems to me the TD5 version is harder to find with a price budget around 15k, I found a 2001 V8 SE which has done 100kms, the dealer asking for 14k, I assume the price is ok?
I m very worry about the fuel expense for this 10 year old v8, can any1 plz give sm advice? the car is not for off roading.
    thanks in advance

Welcome. All that can truthfully be said about the price without seeing the vehicle is that it is ok if you are happy to pay it, but it seems to be on the high side of what I would expect. But at 100,000km it is a low km vehicle for its age, and should therefore be worth a bit more than a higher mileage vehicle.

With the price of fuel today, the more fuel efficient TD5 is worth a very serious look and should be worth more than a V8 for that reason, even if the V8 is nicer to drive. If you don't drive a lot, or if you don't mind the increased fuel use (13 LHK on the highway, 18-20 LHK in town) the V8 could still be a very good choice.

The most important consideration other than general appearance of careful previous ownership etc is the service history. If the seller cannot provide proof of regular servicing throughout its whole life, look elsewhere. Equally, if there is any evidence of coolant loss, walk away.

    Hope this helps.

    Welcome to the forum.

As a comparison for the V8 fuel useage in the above post, out Td5 D2a Auto's best useage was 9L/100km, and the worst was 15.20L/100km .... long term average for the last 12 months is 11.7L/100km ... that's onroad/offroad. It's our daily drive, runs up and down the beach, does the shopping, and any offroad weekends, etc ...

Not too bad for a 2T truck with auto. The V8 will be considerably dearer to fuel ... unless it's on LPG.

Good luck with the choice ... go the Td5 !

I have a D2 Td5 and I have a friend who, up until recently, had the V8. the only downside his V8 was the fuel consumption. (he also had a Jetta as his daily driver). It was really nice to drive and great offroad.

Having said that, it was about $7000 cheaper than my Td5 with the same kms and that will buy a lot of fuel.

But, if I were buying again, I'd spend the extra and get the Td5 and get the ECU re-mapped for a bit more go.

I found this http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...0898&silo=1011last night when looking for a disco, I would question the 20000km, if I had the money and lived near Sydney I would go and have a look myself

    Hi there V8Disco2,

Discovery's have a great reputation for their off road ability. They also have a reputation for needing repairs relating to several well known issues. Parts are not overly expensive if you buy online and can do repairs yourself but if that's not the case then the fuel consumption of the V8 will be the least of your worries.

Most Disco owners will happily accept the regular maintenance issues because that is the trade off for great off road ability.

I am probably going to find some disagreement here but if you don't intend to use your 4WD off road, and you don't do alot of mechanical work yourself, then the Discovery 2 is the wrong vehicle for you. A Japanese 4WD will be easier to own and just as comfortable even if it's a little mundane.

As for V8 vs TD5, the extra $ spent to get a TD5 will be returned to you when you go to sell it. You will never get the extra $ back that you put into a V8 at the petrol station.

    Cheers
    Martin

    thank you all

    dear all
thank you very much for all of the kind reply, it really helps a lot for making the decision. the car had the the log book and service history, but only update to sep 2007 when the car had 99000ks on it, seems the car only done 2000kms, from that day untill now. I was questioned dealer sales, but he says that is not unusual. and i found the gap between the hood and fenders (left and right) is different. Is that mean the car had accident before? dealers answer was "never". no point to argue with him as I m noob anyway.
    cheers all

If you doubt the authenticity of any of the claims, get a third party to have a look, or walk away. There's plenty more out there. - but don't wait too long, people might realise what a great buy they are and push prices up.

I'll respectfully disagree with xsm. From my experience, mine is no more expensive, or less reliable than my friend's 105 diesel 'cruiser. I'm a desk pilot with next-to-no mechanical knowledge and I'd take a disco every time. We rag each other on our respective choices, but in fact they're about even in maintenance costs and breakages. (I just paid less than half what he did for the car.)
