Hoping that the brown crap is stuff flung off the front driveshaft near the cv.
Is there supposed to be a bolt in the hole that I've cleaned to show you all?

goto pirtek (or similar) and get a blanking plug for a hydraulic hose they're plastic and usually a throw away item.
