    Looking at a 04 D2 Td5 purchase ...

    G'day all.

We are looking at buying a 2004 D2 Td5 ... before we jump, I'd very much like to hear a general consensus from owners what their own thoughts are on the 04 D2. What can we generally expect from this truck in terms of performance, mechanical costs and reliability? What are the pro's and cons with this truck? Are we about to buy an albatross or ... ?

    Thanks in advance!

    Tiki.

    Hey and welcome.

Great model and possibly best there was.

Now, do some searches on here and you will find all the answers as this has been asked many times.
Top right hand side is a search key, it will show you many post of same/similar questions.

They are great units but service history and pre purchase inspection is still a must.

    Happy days.

Thanks mate ... I have been using search quite furiously, but perhaps my key words are not up to snuff. Rather than wanting specific disaster stories and or long winded posts focusing only on one aspect of D2 2004 ownership ... I was hoping for some board strokes from those best placed to talk about it.

    I'm searching, but I ain't been finding ...

P.S Please chime in people ... gotta have something to read while I'm searching!

    Cheers.

Dad's got one of the last of the D2a, and has given him great service, Towed his caravan all over the place.
Issues he's had that I know of..
    Oil pump bolt loose.known problem,relitive easy check/fix
Turbo hose collapsed, he went after market for a silicoln replacement.
M&S lights for his Auto, we put in drain lines for the Air-con and all fixed.
    re-newed the Injecter harness,

He fitted an Engine Saver coolant alarm, these are a MUST on any D2..and he got his ECU Remapped..

Thats about it,do as suggested and search some of these faults as they are common with any D2-D2a and check to see if any have been done..

    Cheers Ean

    04 D2

Not sure if this helps but I have had an 02 D"for about 6 years and it is excellent.

I am currently towing a caravan around Australia and it is performing very well.

The only negative is the replacement power steering unit is a noisy one.

The other item replaced was the front tailshaft 2 months ago.

Currently in FNQ awaiting a replacement axle for my caravan which decided to detach itself 2 weeks ago.

Hoping to move on early next week.

Living in WA we get slagged for being in the Wait Awhile state but it also happens in beautifull Queensland as well

Love Queensland so amazing with the beaches and rainforest so close to one another

    I specifically went for an 04 D2 TD5.
Had it for 2 years now and tow a 2.5ton van.
    When purchased, we:-
mapped motor. new shocks. cleaned egr. replaced pads with LR pads. (stops amigo's)
Has been fantastic. Keep the services up. Major issue was fuel lines. These WILL wear through.

Bought my 04 D2 new in june 04.Had a couple of earlier D2's before, but this was the best one by miles, thats why i have still got it.

I have had an engine saver fitted, front driveshaft rebuilt with greasable uni's as precaution, fuel regulater leaked about a month ago, replaced it.BD chip improved power/torque,snorkle is a must if you are gonna do a bit of dusty trecks.Removed EGR.

Raplaced front coils as they sagged(bullbar helped this),also front shocks weeped(two cape trips helped this)

Overall, found it to be by far the best LR i have ever owned, although it has only done 85k.I have also had it serviced regularly by a LR specialist.

SWMBO drives it most of the time as i have a company van,& she loves it.

Another thing,i bought the first one new in 99,& have never had a breakdown in one, ever.

As said, finding one that has been correctly serviced is a MUST.

    Good luck

Gday mate. I bought my 04 TD5 Classic Country manual new in June 04. It is Zambesi silver with LR black interior. I love this car. BUT..... the issues so far are: leaking fuel pressure regulator, replaced under waranty. Possability of fuel lines chafing and leaking, repaired under waranty. The said fuel lines chafed thru on a trip to the snowy mountains (search stuck in the snowys) for more info on this. The Disco has only let us down once and the snowys was it. I feel that with the D2a Td5 preventative maintenance is the key. Target known issues and correct them. Such as the fuel lines, inspect them, replace if necessary and cover them ALL in insulation. Oil pump bolt, check and loctite and torque up till engine turns over. Monitor oil level for diesel dilution, leaking injectors or at worst a cracked head through overheating. The TD5 is not an engine that likes overheating. The Disco is a great drive and I enjoy every minute behind the wheel. Go for a good one with a service history and the lowest km's. Then you can do as I have and fit a Uniden UHF radio, a JVC head unit (KD-AVX33) with reverse camera and the works burger of everything else, removed EGR and vacuum system, larger ventilated transfer case sump, brass plugs in diffs, new injector harness, new injector seals/washers, low coolant alarm, TM2 engine watchdog, turbo pressure gauge, turbo wastegate wound up to 19-20psi. Leather boots on gear leavers and handbrake lever. Soon to come, silicone intercooler hoses, bigger intercooler, ECU upgrade, exhaust manifold mods and new tyres. The originals are getting a bit worn. 64000km.
    Regards
    Robbo

Thanks to all for the replies so far, it is great to get current feed back from owners in the moment. Here is a question for all ...

We have found a 99 Disco II V8/LPG that has low K's looks to be in pretty good nick but the bloke says it has the 3 Amigo's as an intermittent thing. I am very new to this Amigo's thing but have seen a few posts here that suggest it is an easy fix. Should the 3 Amigo's be any kind of barrier to purchase given that everything else on this truck is right for our requirements? Is it an easy fix or big trouble?

Bloke reckons there was a major repair job done some months ago having to do with a steering leak ... does this sound about right for a Disco II in terms of a trouble spot? Also, the bloke reckons rego is about to run out - says he's happy to get the pink slip on it to make nice ... are the 3 Amigos a rego issue?

Thanks for any further comments and advice!

    Best, Simon.
