Id say its an injector seal.
Gday all.
I've long suspected that I have had an issue with diesel in the engine oil of my 2004 Disco TD5. I have had the injector seals and washers replaced (at all 4X4 newcastle) after the first reading came back as 4.4% dilution. I was advised that the job was done and no signs of cracking (of the head) was obvious. From new the oil has always had a "diesel" smell to it but the level on the dipstick never seems to move dramaticly. After the injectors were done I changed the oil and both filters. I also changed oil brands, from Castrol Edge 5W30 (used since its first oil change and changed every 5000km) to Penrite HPR Diesel 5 5W40. I also ran an oil system flush prior to changing the oil/filters. Got the results from the second test today. It showed 6% (elevated abnornmal level) dilution after just 2853km. My question is, is it a cracked head or the injectors?
Silicon levels flagged also as a "high abnormal value" which makes sense considering that I have found dust on the upside of the air filter housing. I use Cooper filters and they are changed every 20000km. Pulled the whole assembly out and found the "ducks bill' completly blocked up with solidified dirt and debris. All this was cleaned out and the filter element renewed. Could the blocked ducks bill be preventing the hyclone thingy from doing its job?
I'm almost ready to take the thing back to all 4x4 and tell them to find the cause of these problems and FIX it.. I'm a fitter/turner by trade but I do not have the time or knowhow to pull the head off a TD5. I love my Disco but I should not be having to face these problems on a vehicle that I bought new and serviced to perfection, never thrashed, never towed anything substantial, and has been loved. Oh.... and its only got 67000km on the clock.
I want to do some performance mods to the engine (toombie!) before we take delivery of our new caravan but I need to sort these problems first. I love my Disco and I want it to be part of our family for many years.
Any feedback more than welcome.
Regards
Robbo.
Id say its an injector seal.

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I'd guess an injector seal too.
Re the air cleaner, double check where it seals, they have a reputation for not sealing properly around the edges, you need to drop that silicon back to as low as possible, particularly with fuel dilution too.
Rick130 and Dave, thanks for the replies. What is the best way of finding out what injector is leaking? I would love to put this problem to bed for good. Sick of worrying about it. I want to use my Disco. I will not use it if it is running less that perfect and doing damage to the engine from fuel dilution and dusting. And if its not the injectors?

Best way to find a leaking injector is to remove rocker cover, clean the oil out and bridge out the fuel pump relay, let it run for a while and keep inspecting.
What's an oil analysis cost and where do you get them done?
Stallie
I get the oil analysis done by Oilcheck pty ltd in Sydney. Quite reasonable price under $45 postage included. Results back in less than 5 working days.

Everyone. An update.
The other day I pulled all the air filter components to try to find the source of the light film of dust that I found on the top half of the filter housing. I pulled the lower half of the filter box out and inspected the ducks bill. I was completely blocked with solidified mud and gunk. I wonder if that was enough to stop the "swirling effect". Oil check came back with "high abnormal silicon" level (as well as 6% dilution). I have always used either genuine or Cooper paper element filters. The Disco is going in next Thrusday to All 4 by 4 to have the Fuel in the oil issue resolved for good. I have accepted the fact that I will be up for a significant expense to resolve this but I love my car and I want to keep it to tow our van on many a happy family holiday. I may have the capability to pull a head off an engine but I do not have the time, patience or tools to do so, I just want the job done properly with the end result being no more fuel in my oil. Or is that too much to ask?

I have had 3 TD5's,and they all got that light film of dust in the top half of the airbox.A wipe across the grill on the MAF with a clean rag or your hand & it will be dirty as well.
I haven't had any oil samples checked, but have tried to get rid of the bypassing air, with little success.I tried high temp vacuum grease around the top sealing edge, between the box & the filter,it seemed to work a bit,but didn't solve the problem completely.
I have also fitted some foam tape along the top edge of the air box so the lid fits on tighter against the airfilter. This helped, but also didn't stop it completely.
i recon the filter & the airbox move while driving which allows the air to bypass the filter at times, around the seal. The lid on the airbox is not held on very tightly, the design is very poor,a '96 dunny dore has a better airbox.
There were a few posts on this a while ago,but i can't find them at the moment
I don't worry about it anymore,i think the only way to fix this problem once & for all is to redesign the air box...
i too use a thick grease film on the airbox and at the maf orings to try and seal out the dust.
again, i don't worry too much about it though as you can really only do what you can do within reason.
