    TD5 Fuel Consumption Figures

    Hi all

This one should get some chit chat happening. I have recently become more aware of how much fuel my TD5 is using. I have read alot of threads on here that rave about TD5 consumption but mine is not so great. (or is it?)

Brand of fuel also seems to have an impact. Was using shell and getting about 14L/100km around town. Tried caltex's you beauty premium diesel and lost more again 16-17L/100km around town.

On the caltex fuel this equates to about 550km out of a tank. I have now changed back to the shell fuel and will run a more accurate test on this current tank.

I am interested to hear about other fuel consumption figures for TD5's so please post some for me to compare with.

My vehicle has travelled 86000km and is very well serviced.

    Thanks

    Dave.

    What modifications have you got?

    Auto or Manual?

    Remapped or Standard ECU?

    Larger tyres?

    Lift?

All factor in, but your fuel usage seems higher than normal.

Mine is 4" lift, 33's and a lardy 2760kg in street trim (not loaded) so has the dynamics of a block of flats and runs around 12l/100km
Its also running a VNT, Bigger IC and more power...

We have two D2 TD5 Auto's, both bog standard no mods on either engine. One 99' D2 180000km will do 850km a tank travelling, not city driving, the other D2a 198000km could squeeze out 900km on the same trip. I have never run out of fuel so maybe a bit more??
Of course a light right foot can help..

Pretty sure this has been done in the last few months, but I can't find the thread right now.

Standard size road tyres and suspension. Chipped (but I think there is an issue there but that is another story) . Manual

With the rooftop tent on I just got 10l/100k @ 100kph (aircon off)

Without the tent it is usually good for around 9l/100

City driving can push it up around 11.5l/100 if I really have to stir things along.

    I drive like a granny..

Also have a 2001 standard Td5 auto with 190,000kms - best consumption 9.4l/100km on a 550km country run with medium load at an average speed of 97km/h, worst was 12.4l/100km city driving.

Are you measuring from chock-a-block full to chock-a-block full?

I find most diesel pumps foam quite badly and the first click off usually stops about 15 - 20L short of full. It takes patience to get the tank properly full but that is the only way to have an accurate reference point.

    2 ^

I always dribble the last 10 litres or so to ensure tank is full to same level each time and I calculate consumption for every tankfull since ownership - it's amazing what the variations in consumption can tell you.

Re different brands of fuel, I have experienced, numerous times, getting better consumption from BP diesel than any other brand, Caltex is probably next best IMHO.

I to have a 01 280,000ks TD5 auto standard tyres no lift and just filled up 830ks for 75Lts with a decent load for most of it, I drive like a granny but still get to the speed limit.

Only mods EGR'd and silicon hoses.

I get these figures regularly, I use BP all the time.

i will be heading back east soon towing a camper trailer and roof racks loaded with a spare tire and tent. on the way from exmouth to perth we averaged about 14 per hundred a bit hirer with a strong head wind. fill up was to the top of the filler neck and trip metre zeroed at each fill up.

Thanks heaps for all your replies. I thought that this thread would generate a bit of conversation.

Tombie....my vehile is a 2004my TD5 disco with no engine mods other than egr bypass and TM2 / engine saver (I know these have nothing to do with fuel consumption). Orginal ECU and auto trans.

It has standard tyres and no extra weight other than a tow bar.

I always fill the tank to a very similar level and alway reset the odometer.

After reading your posts it would appear to me that I am using a bit to much fuel.

Even when the engine is hot the vehicle smells of quite a rich burnt diesel smell. Its an unusual smell to be honest. There are no leaks and the injector o-rings are new a new and the oil level remains regular.

I am starting to wonder if the coolant temp sensor or the air flow meter are causing excesive fuel burn. Any thoughts on this?

Anyone in TAS in the Hobart area got an OBDII scanner or nanocom etc? I would love to see the engine data when hot. I would run it down to JC but it is a bit of a drive from my house and not sure if he is there on saturday mornings (anyone know?).

I will keep you all posted on what the outcome is as I am sure that there is something going on in there.

    Again.....thanks for you responses.

    Dave
