    ABS Sensor replacement?

Got the 2 amigos (TC and ABS only) come on the other day. Then progressed to the 3 amigos. Tested no faults??, cleared. Finally got a fault to come up a few days later saying my F.R Sensor had a "bad output". I'm told now I need a new sensor. Okay , but the Indi guy says I cant buy the sensor that comes with a short cable to the plug in the engine bay, only the longer one that goes straight to the ABS ECU. I have found both types on the net from UK and USA suppliers.

Q: Can I change the sensor with the wheel hub on by threading it through the gap? or do I need to take the hub off.?

I'm planning on getting the short cable sensor..

    Thanks in advance..

You can buy the short sensor still, they are expensive, they are cheaper overseas (UK/USA)

You only need to take the wheel and disc rotor off, the sensor is held in by an Allan Key (5mm) be carefull with the O ring, put the O ring on the sensor, then put it in.

Try places like Rovacraft, Brittish Offroad, MLR and so on, dealers are lazy and couldn't be bothered sometimes.

    before you spend your money....

get the wheel and disc off

pull the old sensor (carefully) and inspect the tone ring and the face of the sensor, clean as required, clean up the hole and then re-insert.

    Hi

In my limited experiance of replacing wheel sensors ( done once only ) , 1 removed the wheel 2 removed the brake caliper 3 removed the disc rotor 4 loosened the 4 bolts holding the hub assembly ( to give me more clearance, you don't have to remove it completley ) 5 cleaned all the dirt away (you don't want any ****e falling inside ) 6 undid the allenkey and removed the sensor. reassembled in the reverse ( lubricate o ring before inserting new sensor you don't want to damage the o ring )
    Hope this helps

Hi there, AFAIK the new type sensor is a long wire sensor, which you plug into the ABS ECU directly. The reason is that the old design with the plug induces parasitic resistance disturbing the ABS signal, using just a single wire this problem is eliminated...

I have a new LR genuine sensor which I don't need anymore (in my case the ABS sensor was not at fault at the end). If you are after a genuine one, I will be happy to sell it...

you can physically check each sensor--
jack that wheel just off the ground,
start car select 1st/drive(no it wont drive off, its a 4wd after all)
if the speedo moves, that sensor is working,,

    easy huh,,,

This is true and correct but even after replacing the wheel sensor you will not get a speedo reading until faults are cleared. So without the nanocom or similar you really don't know if its fixed.

if your using the short cable, you will have to undo the hub as the sensor or plug will not fit out the gap. if you use the long cable you dont have to undo the hub as it comes with no plug. The long cable is better to use as the plugs do give trouble and so do the harnesses back to the slabs unit.
If its got bad output I would try what Blknight said, give it a clean. They are magnetic and get swarf on them.

My fault read was RF sensor "bad output"

On the issue of cleaning, how much grease if any should be in there on the reluctor ring. I had the sensor out the day of my first post. There was grease on the sensor and on the ring, looked clean at that time, couldn't see any metal, unless it was very small. I will go back to it and clean the ring as suggested by Austral LR with a small paint brush through the hole and brake/elec cleaner on the sensor.

I checked the resistance at the plug end tonight and it's within the required range, I guess that means the sensor is okay and it just needs a clean or the wheel bearing is gone (could not find any movement in the hub with the wheel on jacked up or with the wheel and brake rotor off..??
