Water on drivers side, rust in firewall

My 2000 disco was parked outside in the rain last night and i opened the door to be greeted with a fair amount of water on the drivers side carpet. I put the hose on the car and for the life of me I could not see where the water came in but I assume it must be seeping down the inside of the right hand kick panel. I popped the bonnet and had a look around and noticed a rust hole is starting to form right up near the bonnet hinge. It must be where the water pools that runs off the windscreen. I note that the factory has put some gunk under the paint on both sides of this part of the firewall but this has not prevented the rust hole. I now assume that this is where the water is coming from. This does not look like a cheap repair and I don't know for a fact if it even caused the water in the first place. Any thoughts?

I recently had a similar leakage issue, every time it rained I was greeted by a soaking wet carpet on the drivers side
I knew mine has a replacement screen fitted at some point, so out came the hose and gave all around the screen a good soaking but nothing made it inside, I decided to strip out the I side kick panel and have a look and could see where the water was tracking.
It was flowing from the grommet for the door wiring, so I sprayed water around the door opening and could see the water tracking through the bundled cables and dripping at quite a rate, it turned out that water was getting in at the seal around the door check strap, so I sealed this up with a bit of sikaflex and have had dry carpets since.
Worth checking if you can't find an obvious leak, although you may have a more serious issue if you have a rust hole?

Will check that out thanks. The rust was missed in a rwc inspection and the inspector is liable to fix it. He seems happy to do the repairs so I will wait and see on that one.

I have those rust holes and wet carpet too!

I have had soaking wet carpets in drivers side every time it rains and for ages there after too. Rust hole quite large near the bonnet hinge and several other smaller ones forming in that general vicinity.
I have chipped off all the flaky rust and applied rust converter and bogged up the holes and it hasn't rained since!!!
But I am 100% certain that is why my carpets were wet, under the rust hole is the dash foam and plastic backing and then straight into the cab. I am also missing the windscreen mould from the right side which deflects water away from pooling on that firewall area. This was missing long before I bought the car so I'd say excess water has been sitting there for years causing the problem. Unfortunately to buy that plastic part is like $150 odd dollars...so I have done some makeshift water channeling using the ever popular grey duct tape!

There has been so much water get into the gizzards of my dash that sometimes when I accelerate or brake I can hear it sloshing around somewhere under there. Never dug in deep enough to find where it is pooling though.

Yes I did a bog job as well and we had some heavy rain straight after. The carpet still got damp but not soaking so I am thinking it may be from two places. The windscreen looks sis to me as there seems to be some I'll fitting seals and plastic work there so I might get adventurous and pull that out and have a look. I had the water sloshing noise too but I bled the cooling system and it went away so your problem may rest there.
