    Rear door won't open

My rear door will not open. Please help. grabbing the handle and pulling up on the latch there is no clicking noise.

My rear internal door has no door handle to open from the inside.

How can I open the door and what could be causing it?

    cheers, Chris

Known problem, the lock mechanism becomes problematic, like lots a guys I tried try to clean and lube, put in extra springs and the like and it works ok for a while but I just bought a new one in the end and the pain went away.

When mine failed to open same as your symptoms, to open my tailgate I had to access the latch mechanism from inside the rear of car by prising back the door trim and inner plastic, then worked the latching lever directly I.e. Not using any opening handle to do it. Worked for me.

(I have cargo barrier and drawers, real PITA).

    Enjoy.

Before you start ripping the door apart...

Sometimes this caused by the lock mechanism gummed up with dust.

This happened to me in Coober Pedy - with a cargo barrier making access to the inside impossible and all the beer in an esky in the back. .

The solution that worked for me was a blundstone size 91/2.

I took my boot of and used it like a hammer... smacked the black plastic handle on the outside of the door several times pretty hard.

It took half a dozen blows but this was enough to free the lock and let me get the door open... then I simply gave it a big flush out with CRC to get it cleaned out and free.

It did need another clean up after we got home.... but the lock never needed replacing and was still working fine a few years later when I sold that D2.

My rear door also locked up due to dust up at Cape York. Spent hours trying to open it from the inside with no luck so I thought I would try and rattle it loose by hitting some corrugations pretty hard. It worked. The local mechanic suggested I flood the lock area with brake clean and it's been good for another 100,000km since. Other stuff like CRC, WD40 etc would add a lubricant which attracts dust so I would steer clear of them.

My lock plays up a bit, I am hoping to replace it soon, I keep using WD40 on it but it stills fails, I might try brake clean instead. I have found though that if I work the outside handle in a fast squeeze relaese motion it eventually grabs allowing me to open the door. I too believe it is linked to dust ingress as it always seems to fail after travel on dusty roads.

Well it has continued to happen on and off and I am fed up.

I have tried googling, ebay and searching the site for a lead to purchase a new rear door lock assembly with no luck. Can someone please point me in the right direction to purchase a new one either OS or from Oz.

    cheers in advance,

    Chris

Double check the child lock lever is where it should be.
It can drop slightly and causes the external handle to not align up.

I use graphite powder on my lock and no problims in over 3 years.
I washed the lock in CRC after removing and "puff" the graphite in before any multi day dirt trip.
I also fitted the rubber stoper over the catch to reduce dust ingress.

What would cause the internal handle to fail?
Never had any issues with the exterior handle, but the interior one doesn't work at all.
    Child lock?

    Child lock?
That would be where I'd start.
Also the rod from the handle may have come adrift.

Check the child lock switch and if thats not the problim remove the inside handle and try pulling on the rod.
    Cheers, Kyle
