1999 TD5 Disco, replace engine or chassis

    Hi All,

Started a thread last week about a D2a TD5 wreck that I purchased primarily for the engine. Thread is here.

The wreck is a 2003 model with 142Ks on the clock. Looks original and well looked after.

Before I bought the wreck I bid on and won a 1999 D2 TD5 on ebay with an overheated engine & 350 odd k's on the clock. Pretty well serviced, have all the receipts for the past 150k.

I purchased the wreck with the intention of using the engine/transmission & wheels for the D2. Now I am wondering if it may be a reasonable option to take the body of the D2 & put it on the D2a running gear. Anybody changed a body on a D2? It seems not much more work than an engine/transmission transplant.

I could use my bobcat to lift each end of the body and then prop (increase height gradually) so lifting may not be a big issue. I also have heavy duty steel scaffolding that I could erect to support the body high enough to roll out the chassis.

The electrics are mostly contained to the body, except engine connections & ABS etc. Obviously brakes, steering, & transmission will need to be disconnected. What else?

I will post pictures as I progress. Just waiting for my Nanocom to arrive so I can investigate all the current faults before disassembling further.

    Thanks in advance.

I was going to suggest a body onto the D2a transplant until I looked at your pictures. I'd now say that a engine/transmission transplant into the '99 looks like the better option but use the D2a headlamps etc and give it an update whilst you've got it all apart. I suspect you'll need an angle grinder to get the engine out!

If you're going to involve the RTA/RMS in this at the end, I'd suggest you stick with the original chassis. The chassis is the main part with the VIN.

Where abouts is the vin stamped on the chassis? I was hoping it was on the body ony, but if on chassis then I will forget the chassis stamp.

    According to the workshop manual:
"On the chassis RH longitudinal behind the rear wheel"

Looking at the picture, it's behind the fuel filter & near the rear tie down point.

Thanks, located it....Oh well makes that chassis only good for scrap to me - bit of a waste as the chassis is not bent but have not been able to check if it is twisted yet. Doesn't matter either way now.

Probably no need to remove the body from the chassis now. I'll just strip her down, unless it is going to save me some time to remove the body?

My next question is: What are the bits that are a must to remove from the D2a for installation on the D?. Apart from the obvious like engine, transmission (including cdl linkage etc). What about ecu swaps etc? Shorter watts linkage?

as the topic has changed slightly I have started a new thread here. Trying to decide on what bits are the best to keep
