    Removing transmission - need help

Hello guys, my clutch has started to make funny noises (either release bearing or clutch cover's diaphragm), making hard to shift gears, so it is time to install a new kit. I got a V8 2001 with manual gearbox. I have a couple of questions regarding removal of transmission. I went through the forum and didn't find the info.

RAVE is saying to attach a support plate LRT-99-007 to the gearbox and a gearbox jack - I made a plate that I can attach to the gearbox and my troley jack (pretty decent one). However, when looking at the transmission assembly - gearbox, transfer case, bell housing - I am just wondering if the spot on the gearbox, where the support plate should be attached with three bolts, is a center of mass of this assembly. It doesn't look like that. I fear that when pulling the gearbox out of the engine, my troley jack will flip over to the side. Has anyone got experience with this?

My second question is: RAVE is not saying anything about removing the engine mounts to have better access to the top bolts of bell housing - is it better to take the time and romove the mounts, or it is not neccesary?

Thank you for your help! Regards Jiri

I would suggest removal of the transfer case as a separate unit to the gearbox. That is how the dealer I used to work for does it. It makes life easier (less weight and length) and you would want to separate them to do the seals / o rings anyway.

Just found this thread on (re)moving transmission, or rather installing a new clutch kit, from 300TDi Disco 1996. I guess that it is very much similar since the gearbox are the same: Discovery clutch change - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

the guys from lr4x4.com (thank you for this nice tutorial) let the tranny sit on the crossmember - I find it as a good idea. 20cm of space between the bell housing and engine should be enough to install a new kit.

Do you see any problems in doing it this way? Are there any major differences in this approach, between 1996 300TDi and 2001 V8? I guess that I will have to remove oil cooling pipes and some wiring, but should be very similar job.

    Try these:

    Transfer case removal:

    Manual Transmission removal:
    LT308-001.pdf

    Auto Transmission removal:
    LT307-003.pdf

The above procedures detail removing the gearbox/transfer case as a single unit.

its not the center of mass but its a good place to mount up to swing the box from on a trolly jack if the jack will mount it firmly enough.

I've removed the R380 in my old 300tdi Disco and the current Td5 Disco to replace the clutch in each. The Td5 one had to be removed a second time to replace the front seal on the gearbox that I neglected to change.

Each time, I used the jig that I made using the following diagram. I think the pattern came from a list of tools to do the job for the 300tdi.

I adapted the jig to fit my trolley jack and it put the jack directly under the 3 holes that your jig fits to.
I remove the gearbox and transfer as a complete unit and it seems to balance fine. Just make sure that the jig is firmly attached to your jack and that the jack is a substantial one. I've never had to unbolt the engine mounts. The top bolts are tight to get to but not too bad. The V8 may be different.
The last time I removed the gearbox, I did the entire job myself and had it out and on the floor of the shed in 2.5 hours. It was back in that afternoon.
