    Ashcroft torque converter feedback . TD5

    Hello

    I am considering an Ashcroft tq for my 99 TD5 , my current one is buggered but the auto seems ok so was going to be cheap and just swap it out with either a reconditioned one or an Ashcroft one .

    My current one can hit 3200 rpm on the test , probably more . When driving it the converter has no bite and this makes me think one that locks up earlier would be better , ie ashcroft . However a recond one would be a big inprovement so maybe its to low . So wanting feedback from people that have had one fitted to see how they find it . Do you tow with it , how does it compare .

    Are the Ashcroft ones brand new or rebuilt?

    Rebuilt with modified mounts I believe .
    From what I understand the coverter is locked up at 2200 rpm compaired to 2700 rpm in the standard one .
    Without a load I think the ashcroft one would be great , would not need to rev much to get around . However with a heavy traialer I am concerned the auto may bog down at 2100-2200 and not around 2500 peak power .
    I guess what I am asking is does a slighty tweaked TD5 have the grunt to pull at 2200 with a heavy trailer . Just had the usual mods , egr blank , no center muffler and remaped ecu .

    The RPM flash point on a torque converter will increase wtih a more powerful motor. So if you have done performance modifications then your standard torque converter should flash up higher than it would if standard.

    So with a modified engine (e.g. VNT, exhaust, intercooler and tune), the Ashcrofts one may still flash up higher than the rating given on it.

    I have one. Yet to fit it though. Probably won't get a chance until September holidays.

    I have Ashcroft TC on my 2004 TD5. Since the installing it I have got a lot better MPG the engine doesn't rev as much never above 2500rpm normal driving changing gears around 1800rpm, the only draw back is takes longer to heat up these cold mornings.
    My old TC had done 200,000ks revs would rise and I would go no where.
    Your car does have to be tuned, it is a bit like higher gearing your engine is working harder to spin it and you do need the extra power to do this. I do have a VNT, LPG 20%, a great TD5 inside re-map plus lots of other goodies.

    I did install it myself I am very pleased with it. Landed here in Perth was about $900 once ordered I had it here 3 days later and did fit a new flex plate at the same time. the car is going quite good now still tuning next is the diffs gears and then bigger tires.

    Well sold off my left one and ordered an ashcroft t/c . Turned up in about a week . I got it installed as I still do not have a garage . Only driven it home from the mechanic's but its a big improvement . The engine still rev's out to 2500rpm , was expecting lesss so happy . I did a stall test and only get about 2300 , change from giving up at 3200 .
    I will see how it goes over the next week or so and test fuel consumption .
    Also happy as it does not feel underpowered , was a worry after reading all the posts on needing a modified engine etc .

    Well had the torque converter in for a couple of weeks now and it seems to be fine . I was concerned I would not have the extra power needed to run the converter but it seems ok . Does not limit the revs to the extent I was expecting so thats good . Generally runs around 2-2250 rpm now .
    The bugger is I have had no improvement in fuel economy , bugger , was hoping for some . Oh well , atleast I can pull away from the lights in a timely manner now .

    Guys id like to set my td5 up with a lower stall tc.

    Can you guys that have the lower still tc put down rpm to speeds

    Unloaded light driving flat road. 50k 70k speeds what rpm

    And list what mods you have done.

    So Chris you haven't got a chip or exhaust or anything? Standard tyres etc??
