Td5 manual ... centre exhaust removal

    Hi Guys

Just visited my local Midas to arrange a quote to remove the centre muffler and install a straight through pipe on my 2000 Td5 manual. The idea is to help the turbo spool up a little quicker.

The Midas guy said he'd be concerned that it would sound "farty" and drone loudly in the cabin ... although he did say that the turbo would act as a muffler.

Now I'm having second thoughts! I know this has been done to death but can anyone shed some light on the noise levels and benefits?

The quote for the pipe was $200 ... he also suggested a silencer to replace the muffler for an extra $150-200.

    Thoughts?

    midas blacktown did mine, $80.
close enough if you want to check mine, gives it more grunt and cheap mod so why not. not such an issue when you have muddies, they howl more.

    Hi

My 99 has a straight thru all the way with a smallish resonator on the rear. This is because the gas tank is under the car where the centre muffler used to go.

Farty would be one way to describe it, but in a ballsy diesel kind of way, not a sh*tbox kind of way.

It doesn't drone, but can be a bit loud, but not too much, at certain speeds. At 80 -110 it's not too bad, and can actually be reasonably quiet at times.

I am not a young bloke, and my missus wouldn't live with a noisy Farty sound, especially over long distances.....yep she even gets annoyed at those other....err....sounds....

Mate, only you can decide, but I have no intention of going back to a centre muffler.

    Hope this helps.

Mine is a auto but can't see that it will make a difference.

I just removed the centre muffler and replaced it with a Terrafirma stainless steel pipe, I paid $150 delivered from a Aus supplier. I wanted to keep my original silencer in case I wanted to refit it.

To tell you the truth I am a bit disappointed. I can't feel any difference in the performance. At idle it sounds fractionally louder but from inside the car when driving I can't hear any difference.

    Just my 2c worth.

I replaced my centre muffler with a vortex muffler(straight through hotdog)you get the same result but no noise.

When you can, get some silicon hoses for the intercooler and a D2a intercooler(PM Bundalene) I would suggest you modify your exhaust manifold too, the new chip will increase EGTs, the bigger intercooler and silicon hoses will help reduce the increase and give more grunt too.

Thanks Baz! I love the way you spend my money

On a limited budget here and am just trying to get the best "bang for my buck"! I really am hoping that with the ERG gone, a straight through pipe and the same conservative driving style ... I'm not gonna have any EGT or exhaust manifold issues.

I like spending other people money

The manifold mod will be no cost if you do it yourself, just put a cut in the webbing to allow the manifold to flex, that way the studs shouldn't break.

Get an EGT gauge when funds allow, the probe goes in where you blanked off the EGR on the manifold, and when you need your intercooler hoses replaced go with the silicon type, just a couple of things to do over time.

The temps will be fine around town and when not towing, but they do go up when towing, the trick is not to bury the boot and hold it for long periods and don't labour the car when towing, this is when the EGTs will go up dramaticly.

It's fine to do it over time, I did it that way mainly because of no funds.

I have just finished installing a Terrafirma centre muffler replacement pipe and i'm rapt with the result

Now i got a nice purr (almost a burble) from the rear pipe and not farty when you blip the throttle unlike some forum posters have mentioned and that you can also hear on some you tube clips. The engine is definitely more responsive as evidenced by the more lively boost gauge needle. This mod and the recent snorkel install have done wonders for my previously asthmatic TD5.

All round a very pleasing mornings work
