Question Dynamic steel wheels and Land Rover steel wheel nuts

I purchased a set of Dynamic Wheels Black Round Hole steel wheels from Les Richmond Automotive ( http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ions-d2-3.html ).

I am running the genuine Land Rover steel wheel nuts - ANR4851 - as provided by LRA with the wheels.

Had the wheels off to bleed the brake calipers and when I was about to refit just a minute ago I noticed that the wheel nuts have worn into the wheels and the taper on the wheel nuts don't seem to match that on the wheels:

I torque my nuts to exactly 140nm as per Rave specification.

I intend to contact LRA tomorrow when they open regarding my concern, but wondered if anyone here had any knowledge of whether this could be an issue (as others have or had these wheels too)...

Not 100% sure, but looking at those pictures it looks like the nuts were on the wrong way.. ie flat side down???

I second that motion . After enlarging the pics it really does look like the case, Either that or the tapers are severly mismatched That flat side with a rebate is for clipping the plastic nut covers onto?

Cheers for reminding me of this. I have been so busy at work I had forgotten to chase this up.

I assume you the nuts have been fitted with the tapering facing into the rim. I believe the tapers are mis matched.

Ahh! That 4 letter word that prevents meaningful life So you did fit the taper inwards? O that means the tapers are wrong preventing the proper clamping fit. Also the nuts are not bottoming out before they seat are they? Whatever is happening is a pain for you thats for sure.

FWIW I have the exact same steel rims for my D2 as my second set. When ordering I requested Dynamic supply the right nuts for the job, they're after market nuts, not LR nuts like yours. Mine haven't deformed the rim as much as the LR nuts have done to yours.

Had I known/realised that is exactly what I would have done, however, I assumed the nuts that I would be supplied with would be the right ones for the wheels that were being supplied. A good tip for any future purchasers.

On my way home this afternoon I went into Bob Jane T-Mart and had a look at their wheel nuts. I ended up purchasing five M14 x 1.5 chrome capped nuts. This evening I test fitted these to the wheel. They are smaller than the genuine Land Rover nuts and as such a much better fit (the fit into the wheels taper). I also had some Terrafirma nuts from the hub adapters that I trial fitted too, these were also a good fit, but I have already sold the hub adapters and need to post them tomorrow to the buyer, so those nuts will go with them.

A comparison of the three styles of wheel nutes - the short fat black ones are the genuine Land Rover nuts, the long shiny chrome ones are the new ones from Bob Jane T-Marts and the small short ones are the Terrafirma units:

Bob Jane T-Marts nuts fitted (notice you can actually see the silver ring around them of where the Land Rover nuts were sitting on the wheel):

After being torqued to 140nm you can see that they have worn the paint off in the wheel tapers indicating that they are seating correctly (or at least better):

And Terrafirma nuts which fit like the above:

Tomorrow I will go back to Bob Janes to purchase another 18 wheel nuts and then see if the original supplier will accept the return of the incorrect wheel nuts and the hub covers which will no longer fit without the genuine Land Rover wheel nuts. It means the rusty ugly hub is exposed and the chrome bling nuts do look a bit weird but at least they are the correct fit!

    Steel Wheels

I have had the same issue with Dynamic steel wheels, the tyre company would not fit the LR wheel nuts and reluctantly fitted std M14 1.5 nuts that still did not engage the taper fully, I assured them I would follow up and fix the problem.

The minor diameter of the holes are 14.5mm good clearance for M14 studs.
The major diameter is 16.5mm this equals an angle of 80 degrees with a 6mm thick wheel hub it should be 60 degrees with a major diameter of 21mm. I did not want to remove the tyres and send the wheels back so I purchased a 60 degree countersink tool and made up a stop. Used a large electric drill on very slow speed and cut the tapers to 60 degrees to a depth of 4mm the last 2mm parallel at 14.5mm was retained. The std wheel nuts engage the taper really well and the LR plastic hubs clip on and surprisingly stay on without a wheel nut groove to sit in. The metal ring clip needed rewelding though.
Sorry to ramble on I am not suggesting you fix this yourself but in short I think you should maybe send the wheels back, the wheel nut taper needs to be engaged in the wheel taper without bottoming out on the hub.
I have some photos somewhere I will post them.

    Regards Ollie
