    Changing Ratios

I am planning on putting 265/75 tyres on my Td5. I would like to get my gearing similar to what it is with standard tyres.

I have done a bit of searching and found that I cannot fit a defender transfer case.

Can I fit the gear set from defender? Which is better, change diff ratio or transfer?

I have done it again. This was supposed to be in D2 forum. Mods please move. Must be old age setting in

Dave if a tdi can cope with 265's then the TD5 should be fine, if all you want to do is correct the speedo you may need to change the speedo drive gear (if possible on a D2 ) or fit an electronic gizmo.
I wouldnt go to the expense of a gearing change unless you plan on running 33" tyres permanently.

    Are 265/75 33inch?

I have heard a lot of people complain about loss of grunt when fitting bigger tyres.

Suck it and see, if you reckon you need more grunt after you've tried it a chip would be a cheaper, easier and quicker was of picking up more than you lost. Talk to Toombie.

No, 31.5"-32", the same OD as most 235/85's.

Deefers run the 1.4:1 t/case gears with that size from the factory.

I'm using 33.3" tyres with a tweaked Tdi in the Deefer and don't have a problem with the 1.4:1 high range except first gear when towing, then it's start in low/second, but it was the same problem with standard 235/85's and a stock engine too.

I'd try it first, then if you can't live with it the easiest solution is a Defender t/case and if you want to improve low range use some maxi low-range gears.

Hello. I ran 285's on my Td5 130 when I had it and it actually made the speedo accurate to the GPS!! Didn't change the gearing either. Td5 pulled it fine.

I am planning to chip it and add bigger intercooler. There are a few reasons for wanting the original gearing.

1/ If the gearing is reduced it will help take some of the stress off the drive line.

2/ Although the Td5 has reasonable take off I am finding that at 100/110 kph it is still not the greatest for overtaking.

3/ I do plan to do some towing.

4/ I am a hoon. About two years ago I was contemplating what to get to replace my ageing D1 Tdi. I was tossing up between a D3 and a Puma. I then happened to have the use of a D2 Td5 with bigger intercooler, chipped and ACE. When I first drove it I thought I must have been mistaken and it was a V8, not Td5.

When I realised it was an oiler, it was a case of I have to have one of these. Part of the driving of this vehicle involved towing a 16 foot caravan.
I was blowing away the opposition at the lights.

Well with those mods you will be fine with 265's.

I have just recently fitted the exact same size tyres to my td5 disco. You don't notice the power loss that much but it does use a little bit more fuel.It still drives pretty good and no real loss down low in the revs.Although my Speedo is about 5 kph out.
